And assuming Green and Smith get decent tenders, about how much cap space does that leave us? I shudder to think how little, but I have no clue. Anybody?

Looks to be right at 8 mil if we low tender Merritt, Urban, Brown, and give 2nd round tenders to Green and Smith. If we choose not to tender Merritt and cut Shipp brings us to a little over 10 mil.

10 mil should be enough for one or two good FA and some depth FA (maybe 2).

Would we need to set apart some of the $10 mil for a rookie pool?

I have the same question. I have to assume yes and that number is probably around $3mm.

At this point, I would be happy with keeping Pace and adding a some cheap pieces to help with veteran depth.

We shouldn't tender Merritt or Urban. We can get both of those guys back at minimum salaries. WRs of their talent level are a dime a dozen in the NFL free agency pool.

Update (Includes deadspace to the cap, and Green,Smith tender offers 2/28) from my Feb 16th post :

Cards Free Agent Budget

Cap space left (From Joe's Spreadsheet) - $12.20M (includes Fitz current $14.5M base salary)

Probably Cuts :
Holt $3.50 - Cut
Berry $4.00 - Resigned saving $3.0M (instead of 4)
Ross $2.80 - Cut
Shipp $1.75 - Still on team (I still think they cut him)
Cooper $0.90 - Cut

Total Savings : $12.15

Cap Space after Cuts : ~$24.35

The Cards need use cap space for :
Dansby F-Tag $8.10 - Tagged
Rookie Pool $3.50
E.Green $2.00 1nd Round Tender 2/28
Pace $4.25 (or equalivent player)
Hodel $0.65
Vincent $0.75
Brown $0.93 RFA Tender - Tagged 2/27
Smith $2.00 1st Round Tender 2/28
Urban $0.85 RFA Tender
Merrit $0.85 RFA Tender (or simular player)
Punter $0.65

Total Used: $23.68 Million

Cap Space left ~$-0.20M

The Cards have not tendered all those players yet, but they will tender most of them. That leaves them $4.25M to resign Pace or equalivent player as their only free agent move.

$3.5 should be close to the needed amount for the rookie pool.

Only players in the top 51 of salaries count against the cap until the final cut just before the season starts.

Players drafted in the 4th - 7th round has small contracts and don't even come close to breaking into the top 51, so there contracts do not count.

This year the Cards have the 16th pick which will cost much less against the cap in years past. So, $3.5 should be a good guess.

Edited my post to include the tenders for Green and Smith, both got 1st round tender when I was thinking 2nd.

Right now, those WRs I was expecting to be tendered will most likely now not be. The Cards will have to hope they can be resigned for cheaper.

Currenly the Cards are over my budget, which means less money for a Pace contract or lower contracts for Vincinte, Urban, and Merrit.

The Cards still have the option of reworking some contracts if they get close on a FA deal and run out of cap room. Edge or Lienart or both. I'm sure they would work with the team if they knew it meant getting Faneca.
