The metal bats is just one of the many reasons I can't follow college ball, I've always felt they give the game a cartoonish affect with a bunch of 5'8 guys carrying around these sticks that can pound the ball 450 feet. Now granted I did feel a similar way about pro ball during the Steroid and Matchbox Ballpark Era, but because other aspects of the product on the field (especially defense) were so good I somewhat overcame it.
I also can't stop to think when watching college baseball that I'm watching something similar to Segregation Era Baseball due to the lack of Latin players. Last I heard they make up around half of MLB rosters and without them and the other American kids who go to the minors straight out of high school you're really only getting to watch about a quarter of the best young players in the world. There is also the issue of games never being televised nor is there any decent media coverage (probably due to the reasons I stated) so following the sport closely becomes quite the hassle. Neither of these are problems with the revenue-producing college sports.
I've tried with college baseball, many of my friends go to games and I've been to a few of them as well as minor league games when living in Tucson. I had a good time, but it's mostly because I like baseball in general (still play in a men's league every Summer) and just being at the ballpark. But to me it's minor league baseball and I've always lived less than 20 minutes or a remote control away from major league baseball and the choice is easy when it comes to choosing one to follow. I suppose of I learned to be a more casual fan it could be possible, but the sport is so obscure and has too many flaws that it would take way too much time and energy to be the devout fan of it that I am of other sports.
Just my opinion of course, you guys are more than welcome to it. Just like I'll never badmouth NASCAR or Arena Football League fans despite my negative opinions on those sports. As they say, different strokes...
