Check what this ASU student writer wrote about Lute and Bobbi Olson. No class at all. This guy is a total loser.

Running diary from ASU vs. UA men's basketball

By Nick Kramer
Web Devil
I love college basketball. There's nothing more exciting than being a part of the student section at a college basketball game, and it doesn't get any bigger than our beloved Sun Devils against the University of Arizona. So I kept a running diary during my Saturday at the big game.

12:06 - Said "U of A sucks" to a couple dressed in Wildcat gear on Mill Avenue while walking to Wells Fargo Arena. The girlfriend thinks I'm going to get into a fight before we get to the stadium. She has already stated twice how she is "not going to bail [me] out of jail if get arrested." If I only had a dollar...

12:33 - We settle into our seats... in the 15th row. I thought we'd be in great shape an hour before the game, but it is Pac-10 play. I guess the freaks come out when UA is in town. I'll take a note before next game.

12:35 - People are handing out boxes of pom-poms in the student section. How easily amused we all are. People are climbing over the seats from other sections to get these things. It looks like a bread riot in Moscow right now.

12:40 - The girlfriend just asked me what ASU's chances are in this game. I told her it's somewhere between the Viking's playoff run and Pete Rose getting back into baseball.

I know it's still early in the season, but we're 4-3 with three so-called "bad losses." The worst part of it all is we should have won all three of those games. How do you let Western Michigan back into the game - at home? How can you let Tony Parker's little brother go the length of the floor on you? Tournament teams just don't let this stuff happen.

12:42 - There's a UA fan in the student section. I have two questions for this one:

How did he get here? and
How stupid is this guy? If I went to Tucson decked out in gold and sat in the student section, I'd have to expect to get the crap kicked out of me.
The girl who keeps hugging him is an ASU fan. Again, two questions:

Why did she drag him into the student section?
Why do her friends let her date him? I feel a bad Jerry Springer Show promo coming on here: "Degenerate, callow Wildcat fans and the women who love them, on the next Jerry."
12:52 - I think I just spotted the woman who accused Ell Roberson of rape. She's sitting two sections away from me, and she keeps winking at Ike. This can't be a good thing.

12:58 - I just heard my 17th "Go back to Mexico" call directed towards Wildcat fans. It's just a magnificent, timeless putdown. No matter what is said in an argument with a UA fan, that gem wins every time.

1:02 - Every time I look at the UA players, I'm reminded of the scrimmage between Texas State and the prison in Necessary Roughness. I'm not calling them criminals, I'm just saying I wouldn't be surprised if someone blew a whistle and they all boarded a bus back to Tucson.

1:03-1:26 - Various random objects are being hurled at the UA fan in the student section. It's pretty standard stuff so far-paper wads and pom-poms. I just can't wait until someone spills their nachos on the dope. If there is a God, this will happen.

1:27 - This game officially has that big game feel to it. The UA fans are loud, and the ASU fans are louder. This is what college basketball is all about. This place is really rockin' right now.

1:39 - Ike has been fouled five times in the first two minutes of this game, and nothing has been called. UA, on the other hand, is getting all the calls.

1:54 - There's 10 minutes left in the first half and UA leads 20-16. I've already had to run to the concession stand to get a drink to save my voice. This game could be a marathon, and I'm running a sprint right now.

1:57 - The girlfriend just slapped me for an inappropriate comment directed at Lute Olson. She did warn me about saying anything about the coach's late wife before the game, but who listens to their girlfriend? Wait, don't answer that.

2:03 - UA has made the first big run of the game. This isn't good. The Devils haven't responded well to runs so far this season, but maybe this time it'll be different.

2:07 - Those European players sure know how to whine, don't they? UA has one, and he sure looks like a stiff. What's his name, Divac, Milosovic, Kukoc? Oh, it's Radenovic, and he really is a stiff. Arizona picked him up at the last minute this season; right after Isaiah Fox stole his eighth candy bar and was done.

2:15 - This game has just gotten out of hand, and the refs aren't helping. Stevie Moore just blocked UA's Chris Rogers from behind, and the refs called an intentional foul for no reason. How can Rob Evans just take this kind of officiating? Does he even care about this game?

2:18 - Halftime. UA leads 46-30, and the score doesn't reflect how far apart this game really is. The Devils just don't seem to have it today. There's a lot of standing around on offense and missed assignments on defense. The second half has the potential to be pretty long.

2:35 - The second half is underway. Besides Ike and Stevie Moore, there isn't much to look at on the ASU stat sheet. Channing Frye is UA's leading scorer, despite having no plays run for him. Arizona won't reach the Final Four this year unless they realize Frye is their best player.

2:38 - This thing is coming dangerously close to becoming a 20-minute shoot around for Arizona. The Devils look like they're still in the locker room at this point.

2:42 - I just noticed how every player on Arizona has completely different shoes on. The whole team concept is totally beyond these guys. It's like they all have their own contracts already. It's a me-first kind of system, and every guy plays it well. Nobody in the country has more talent than Arizona, but they'll never play together as a team, and someday, maybe later than sooner, it will catch up with them.

On the other hand, ASU doesn't exactly play the team game, either. Ike should be touching the ball on every possession. There are no cuts, and no pick and rolls. Basically, there is no motion at all to this offense. It's my senior year and I couldn't be more disappointed with the way the football season turned out, and it'll be no surprise if the basketball season goes the same way. Just hope and promise followed by a big, disappointing letdown. At least there is the possibility of more home games if the Devils make the NIT.

2:52 - Devils are down by 21 and some Rock 'n Jock rules would definitely help right now. Somebody bring down the 25-point goal. Rob Evans needs Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers to play guard right now. Did that guy ever miss when it mattered? Just sit him on the baseline and let him pop all day.

2:55 - The strongest "U-of-A" chant of the day is raining down upon us. This sucks. There's 11:41 left in this game, and Arizona is leading 72-46. The first exodus by ASU fans from this massacre has just taken place, and I can't blame them. There is no life in anyone wearing gold at this point.

3:00 - I just looked at Hoodzow up in the press area. He looks like he's at his sister's dance recital. It's just a mixture of boredom and fatigue at this point. Only the players' mothers are still enjoying this one.

3:04 - Arizona is scoring at will. Frye just dunked, leading to a bunch of dancing and posturing by the UA players. Did these guys attend the Kellen Winslow Jr. School of Sportsmanship or something?

Meanwhile, ASU fans can't get out of this place fast enough. There's gonna be a riot at the exits if this keep up. I've never wanted to stop watching something so bad in all my life. The Arizona fans are treating this place like their own, and honestly, who can blame them?

3:10 - The guy behind me is wondering aloud whether Arizona will score 100 on us. I guess we can still root for that not to happen.

3:12 - Salim Stoudamire has his knees iced up, resembling a young Forrest Gump when he walks. It has nothing to do with the game, I just wanted to point out how much of a tool he looks.

3:15 - Arizona just put in their token white walk-on guy. There's 5:11 left in the game, and this guy is going to pad his career .07 points-per-game average because the Devils can't get within 30 points. Nice job ASU.

3:22 - Lute Olson just got a technical foul, pointed to the crowd, and then to the scoreboard, completely unprovoked. This guy's up by 30, everything seems to be going his way, and he pulls a stunt like this. I thought he was supposed to be one of the most respected coaches in college basketball. There is nothing in his behavior to support that theory. It's just reason #742 why anyone from UA has no class. ASU fans didn't act like this when we won the football game... again.

3:29 - This thing is finally over. Final score: 93-74, Arizona. The most annoying fans in college sports are bleeting like goats in heat because they finally beat ASU-in something.

Apparently you didn't read this carefully. His girlfriend did warn him and he implied that he ignored her.

Personally I could care less what some hack of a college journalist wrote about the game. ASU basketball fans have proved that they have an massive inferiority complex that makes them need be classless retards over the years. Lute said all he needed to when he pointed at the scoreboard.

Uh, apparently I did, but I think you guys are being a little sensitive (which is why I made the ****** remark).

Speaking of class, IMO UofA's team has no class, but that's just my opinion.

I couldn't care any less about minor league basketball anyway...college basketball has sunk to a level that is pretty pathetic nowadays. All of the great basketball players skip college, or stay for only a year or so.

I really could care less what this clown said about Lute. I'm not Lute, nor a cancer survivor, and thankfully have not had a close family member pass away of the disease so it doesn't offend me. But I'm sure it offended other people at the stadium or those who read his column that have had cancer or have had a loved one with the disease. To say there is nothing wrong with his comment (which is all I disagreed with at the begiining of this thread), is ludicrous.

Oh, and if UA's players have no class for being cocky and celebrating, then what does that say about the ASU basketball fan base, who has made a mockery of themselves with these types of incidents dating back to the Steve Kerr "PLO" comments?

I was more talking about the thievery incidents. But they are cocky, and don't display the class that athletes should display when they are humiliating an opponent.

UofA's football teams stomping on our midfield logos is another example. It was quite pleasing that our boys didn't do the same in the rematch, leaving the field with a victory in hand with dignity.

The ASU fanbase is quite slim....but they are reacting to a team that not only humiliates them, but also hoots and hollers and makes asses of themselves. I would love it if the ASU faithful acted with class, but I can understand why the don't (not that I agree with it).

Re: Class

Both Bibby and Edgerson, when given the chance to take the mic and make a comment after winning the national championship (in OT versus a shorthanded Kentucky team)...took the mic, flipped the bird with both hands and said "To anyone who thought we couldn't make it this far F$%K YOU!!!"

Very nice.

Nowhere did I defend anything UA basketball players have done because God knows they have had their share of players of questionable character. All I said was the ASU fans behavior of taunting Olsen about his late wife of fifty years as well as their newspaper printing a story that included a comment making light of his wife's death were completely inexcusable and in my opinion far worse than telling Kentucky fans to f--- themselves (as uncalled for as that is).

Also I didn't realize ASU fans knew how to spell National Championship, just as us UA fans can't spell Roze Bowl.

Close, but inaccurate. I watched the incident on TV and neither one of the players "flipped the bird" or said "f*** you". They both said, ''Whoever said we couldn't do it can go to hell".

Still a classless move, but no obscene gestures or profanity were involved.

Man, I wish I had it on tape. I would have sworn they did and said way more than "go to hell." It became a big deal for a couple of days after it happened, a lot of talk in how classless it was, etc. I'll look into it. I watched it on tv as well, being in Az.

And you aren't seriously going to cast dispersions at U of A's National Championship are you?

To begin with, Kentucky wasn't "shorthanded". They lost some good players to the NBA the season before, but they were still good enough to get to the title game. Not to mention that the Cats beat the defending champs in the final game who were coached by Rick Pitino.

And that '97 squad is still the only team to beat three #1 seeds, including Kansas, the consensus #1 team in the country!

No. No qualifiers are necessary when speaking of that National Title!

Derek Anderson was Kentucky's best player in '97. He was their leading scorer until he had a knee injury. He was fully cleared by doctors to return to the court a few games into the tourney, but Pitino refused to play him because he felt it would risk his NBA draft status if he somehow was reinjured. DA was pissed at the time because he was ready to play ball.

Even without their best player Kentucky still made the final game and took the Cats to OT.

BTW: I would have called the Wildcats "shorthanded" had they had a top player, say Miles Simon, out because of academic ineligibilities or some other reason.

Fact: Kentucky was shorthanded. Take it as a slight if you want, but it was/is a fact. They were still a very tough team led by a great college coach.

Sounds like BIM is stretching just to find something bad to say about the UofA. That's not only sad, but pathetic as well. :p

Not saying anything bad. You guys won the 97 championship.

If I was going to say something regarding UofA basketball, I'd say Lute's teams have actually underachieved given the talent they've had. Only one championship? ;)

Here's a link. The apology is on the right side.

Well in the sense that it offended a few people, I would say that the editor did the appropriate thing.

That article was comedy gold....seriously. I guess the group on the short bus in that god forsaken city to the south would take offense to some of it, but damn, it was funny!

I agree, but for other reasons. It should have been left up for the whole freaking world to see.

Idiots like that guy NEED to be exposed as the clueless idiots they are. Yelling things at Olsen about his deceased wife? Are you kidding me????

Good point.

I'm just glad he didn't outright print anything directed at Lute's first wife (she and Lute were together longer than his second wife has been alive).

Doesn't really make much sense to me. Holler at the player or the coach, or even rip Tucson, but why bring their family into it ala Kerr's dad or Lute's first wife? That's classless.

Agreed completely, and when stupid ass UofA fans do it, as Im sure they have, Id be there condemning it as well.

Nothing wrong with some good slag, but damn, some things ARE sacred.
