In the words of the Kiwi guy being interviewed during the previous game.

"He is a mahnstah!"

I wish the team used that soundbyte whenever he makes a play that we haven't seen from a Suns Center before. I know that would happen a good bit but I'd be fine with that.

Ayton has been lighting it up. Even though it's preseason, this is encouraging. He's led all rookies in Points, Rebounds, Blocks, free throws and field goal attempts.

His stats actually go beyond leading other rookies but leading the entire league in a number of those same categories. Amongst all players, Ayton is leading in points, rebounds, blocks, free throw attempts, and field goal attempts.

All that is coming in just a hair under 30 minutes a game. I expect his playing time to go up a little in the regular season but probably stay around 32-34 minutes a game.

Part of it reflects the absence of Booker. But it also represents Ayton stepping into the lead role with no professional experience and having played Power Forward at U of A.

All in all -- pretty spectacular!

So much for knocking his defense. Here is the deal. In rebuilding a team, you need to gather three star players. We have two. Add one more player. We have free agency next summer to do it. After that, the bench players will find you.

That's WITHOUT Booker on the floor!

And he doesn't force anything. I can only remember him forcing two bad shots throughout preseason. Very impressive!

He's going to be a phenom, an absolute monster.

With him and Booker, I think we could have a pretty incompetent front office and still be in the playoffs by 2020. I hope they try and surround them with players who can be a part of the future and not a mix of scraggly over paid vets, like the mid 2000s Cavs did when they tried to rush their contention.

Hard not to be excited. We have the next Kobe/Shaq, a promising coach, several promising role players, 25mm to spend next summer, and a couple of good picks.

We are going to have to either over pay for a PG or draft one. Everyone knows we are desperate and have no choice. If nothing else McD is responsible for putting us in this position, which would aggravate the $#$ out of me if it were my team.

We need to pursue a top guy like Walker or Lillard and be prepared to over pay big time. Its like a $9.00 beer at the ballpark. The Beer stand knows you have no choice but to pay $9.00. Our picks and players outside of Booker and Ayton should be in play for the right guy with a long term deal in place.

My guess is this was the final sticking point between McD and Sarver.

I'm not a fan of overpaying for a PG but if we are going to overpay then we need to do it for someone who will be our PG now and in the future. Walker and Lillard fit that mold. I can't see Lillard being dealt right now though. A bad Blazers start could change that. I'm not crazy about overpaying for Kemba either but he is good enough to be our PG of the future. I don't want to see him resigned for max money though. He's too much like Bledsoe and Knight for me to be comfortable trading for him and then shelling out top dollar. There are some other options, Dragic is one, and perhaps there are more out there. Whoever our GM is needs to start shopping. We need our PG now and it's ok to sacrafice some salary cap space next summer if we think we found the answer at PG. Ideally we won't lose more than $10 million in cap space next offseason. I'm not sure how to make that happen right now but it's a possibility if we include more than just expiring contracts like Chandler.

That would be best but I'm confused, why would you include Goran in your options list. I don't see how he can be our point guard of the future?

Right now, for everyone else in this league, it's a sellers market when it comes to PG's. So we are likely going to have to overpay but not all overpays are created equal. I'd make the Milwaukee pick available for someone that wouldn't kill us at the point but I'd go no higher for the Dinwiddie's out there.

Why couldnt he be? I know the guy is 32 but he's not oft injured so there really isnt any reason he shouldnt have another 6-8 yrs? Stockton played until 41. NOT SAYING HE'S JOHN STOCKTON PEOPLE! Just an example that he could play that long. Now if injuries start popping up that different but for now he averages probably around 75 games played a season.

He's played year-round basketball for most of his NBA life and IMO he can't afford to lose half a step. At his best he was nowhere close to John Stockton so a drop off in effectiveness is going to do far more harm to him than it would a Stockton or Nash. And statistically, it looks like he might already be starting his decline.

Even with losing a half a step he's better than anything we have currently and probably better than anybody else we could bring in to run this team. He obviously knows how to take care of his body & conditioning to remain uninjured after so many minutes played per year as you state. I'd take that over any pg weve had since Nash.

I am a Dragic fan, and I would not be opposed to bringing him back as a stop-gap. He is not our point guard of the future. He relies on his speed and quickness, and at his age, he is already starting to lose some of that. Offensively, I think that would be fine- bring the ball up, had it to Booker, be ready to shoot an open 3, run an occasional pick and roll. However, he is not nearly the playmaker (or the shooter) Nash was, and he is not a playmaker or a defender that Stockton was. He is a fine stop-gap for a year or two, but nothing more. And keep in mind, this is coming from a huge Dragic fan.

I wouldn't mind Dragic either... but only at the right price.

Goran is overpaid right now. If we could get him without giving up anything of real value other than cap space, I'd consider it. But I wouldn't be willing to give up value and cap space, eating his contract is already fair value IMO. I'd give up picks and salary space for a PG of the future but Goran isn't that future.

To be realistic though, what are the chances we end up doing anything really earthshaking with that cap space?

I am like 95% sure Kemba Walker isn't coming here. All the insider talk is that he wants to stay in Charlotte, where he gets to be "the man" and gets the biggest payday. Irving is staying in Boston. Every other FA PG is either restricted or will likely be overpaid. I wouldn't mind Rubio, but I don't see anyone else who is really worth holding out for.

The other superstars available - Durant, Leonard, Butler, Klay, Cousins - aren't coming here.
