Just to kick Ayton on his way out, dude changed his player jersey in 2k within an hour of being dealt. He's playing video games that quick after being traded.

Question is.. as a defensive strategist.. does Vogel consider Allen a viable asset? I mean I pretty much hate Allen too - but hate aside

If you're in a big game - and a certain player on the opposing team is having a big game... would you?

I'm reading a lot of people that HATE this trade because we didn't get value. Think of Portland fans getting Ayton for Lillard? Wow! ;)
Actually they did alright considering. They got an unprotected pick, a couple of pick swaps, a sought after Jrue Holiday plus our rookie while clearing a lot of salary off their books for a middling big man and an unhappy 33 year old star dealing with injury issues. Maybe it's not superstar return but it's a lot more than just Ayton and better than any rumored Miami deal I read about.

I don’t think it was a Frank decision because even recent comments from him don’t mesh with this move.

Yeah… that could easily have been PR. What else do you think Frank was gonna do? Tank the asset they were apparently desperate to get rid of?

I'm sure the stars of this team are happy that they aren't gonna have to spend so much mental energy trying to motivate a player to work hard like they always had to do with Ayton.

That has to be pretty mentally draining to be constantly pushing a guy to play hard and quite often not getting the response you want.

My brother and I have been talking about this year. He is convinced that there won’t be an in between type season. Either the team is going all the way or it’s going to flame out and be a disaster.

Well, I think for most of us we're at a "win it all or else" point so yeah, it will be championship or utter failure. We may not be horrible but it won't matter, it will feel like it if we don't finish it off this season.
Yup, I agree with both of you guys. If we don't win it next year, no matter how good a season otherwise, it's going to feel like a gigantic fail.

It might be neither.
I feel like this is a pretty unlikely outcome, though. The possibility that both we come up short at winning it all AND that Ayton has at least a statistically improved season with Portland (even if it's a superficial improvement) is going to lead to a lot of second guessing this move. I guess it's always possible that we don't win it all and Ayton gets injured or just has a lousy year, but that seems less likely.

Of course, if we do win it all, than no one will be regretting the trade whether it had a substantial effect or not.

If he throws up his usual 18/10 or even 20/12 and that team remains atrocious, then Ayton fans will just be looking for reason to complain, IMO.

Considering that roster he may well average something like 23/12. Albeit the team will be bad and his efficiency won't be as good.

Also, Nurk now has Frank Vogel as coach. In Portland, he had Terry Stotts and Chauncey Billups, both of which don't have near the reputation as a defensive guru as Vogel. I'll be interested to see how Nurkic's game changes because of that.

First couple years after we drafted Ayton we were awful. And he didn't average 23/12.
I believe he is more skilled now than when we drafted him and we also had Booker who we were running the offense through. I very much suspect quite a bit of offense will be run through Ayton in Portland. They are a super young team and he will likely be their #1 option to score.

You think Ayton isn't going to be super motivated against us? My prediction is his best game of the year will be against us.
Okogie can shut him down. He never bullied a smaller player ever. It was either a jump shot or turnover if he got the ball with a smaller player on him. On rare occasions when he actually established deep position he could get a baby hook, but he couldn't punish a mismatch to save his life.

Agree to disagree on that one. He's always been skilled, but only 1 year of his 5 years did he actually show it, and that was 2 years ago.

So Vogel is going to make him faster? He has to play drop coverage because that is all he is capable, if you watched CP3 for the last 3 years with the Suns you should be well aware of what a problem that can be.

Coaching is not the issue.

The guy lives on 2k. He was playing 2k right before playoff games last year. Now he gets dealt and what's his reaction? "Better update my avatar on 2k!"
Well, I will probably play some 2k later tonight too. Spending some free time playing video games has nothing to do with your ability to do your job.
