Ayton will average 20-11 for Portland and there will be a lot of hand-wringing here. We just have to remember that there is no way that he would have averaged that on this team. There just would not be the offensive touches.
And they will barely clear 30 wins.

Who cares? We all know he has the talent. If he puts it together in Portland where he's expected to vs here where he never captured the opportunity, then more power to him. That tells me more about his mindset, although I know for sure that a lot of this board will blame the Suns.

if they just don't want Ayton, well they don't want him.
They not only didn't want him, they were DESPERATE to get rid of him before the season. It better work, because if Nurkic is unavailable and the bench players prove to be no better than what we already have, it'll be a really bad trade.

Still don't like the trade, but if they just don't want Ayton, well they don't want him.
And it's not about what Ayton averages a game - it's about his inability to close a game

Yes, but pretty normal. That's why I always find it funny when this board has coversations about a core of 6-7 players growing together for several years.
How many other teams in the league only have 1 player remaining from their final 2021 season roster?

If it is so normal, there must be several, right?

If it works, they'll look like genuises. There is the possibility this also backfires.

Book and KD were clearly on board with this, so I guess we'll have to trust them.

We'll see!
I'm so happy for Book - never having to go thru that bs again - I think we may be done getting blown the F out of the playoffs every year

I'm not going to look at every roster in the league. The Lakers have only two, James and Davis. The Jazz, who had the league's best record in 2020-21, have only one, Jordan Clarkson. It's pretty normal.

I watched this. Most of this was plays of aggressiveness. Throwing his butt back into a player and the trip with his foot going back behind him were the worst of the bunch. The rest of it was no big deal. Aggressive plays, or fairly small movements. He has a reputation that will hurt him. Chris Paul did this stuff all the time.

The other potential downside to this is by moving Ayton, we definitely have put ourselves further behind the 8-ball with needing Booker, Beal, and (especially) Durant to stay healthy through this season and especially the playoffs.

While we still had Ayton as a "3.5" level player, we could definitely better withstand a block of games (even in the playoffs) where any one (or possibly even two) of the stars were out. Now we no longer have that luxury. Now the dropoff if we lose Book/Beal/Durant for any length is going to be far more precipitous.

And it seems like there will be a very good possibility that we will be looking at that sometime in the next two years of having a viable window with this roster.
You really think Ayton is reliable? I don't.

Ayton was one of the main reasons we were two wins away from a title. He certainly wasn't the reason we lost the series vs. the Bucks.

At the time, he DID provide championship level play - the past couple of seasons have been undoubtedly disappointing but to say he could never provide that? Too far.
I think Ayton is only as good as he wants to be on that day or days. That's a dangerous kind of guy to rely on.

Tripping people is just weak. It's a play for cowards. Even those videos are enough to show that it's instinctual for Allen -- if you're beat, go for the trip. If he had come up through street ball instead of the world of privilege, he would have gotten his hip dislocated in retaliation by now. It would have taught him a valuable lesson.

The question is whether Ayton's issues were due to Monty, and would Vogel have made a difference? I guess we'll never know now. Obviously, the Suns didn't feel like it would have made a difference, or at least that other issues with Ayton weren't worth the trouble. So they chose to do what they did.

I would still maintain that even an unreliable Ayton would have value over the course of the entire season for a team chasing the championship, especially when they might have to be dealing with potential injury issues to the other three main cogs. At the very least, it might have behooved them to not sell short and see what the market was at midseason if he continued to be problematic.

Still, it is what it is, and so we shall see how it plays out. But any of the posters here expressing (at this point) that there was absolutely no risk in this trade, or that the Suns have indisputably benefited from it, are being pretty wrong headed, in my opinion.

The Beal trade was a shocker for me - to get Beal/Goodwin for what we gave up seemed like a great deal. This one seems like a forced move, and the return reflects taht.

That's possible, but not an absolute. I think this is the weakest trade that Ishbia has signed off on, but we have yet to see anything from the organization about it.

is anyone but maybe 1 or 2 posters making the argument bolded above? Most everyone here not bashing the trade is pretty much in unison saying it had to come down to Book/KD hating Ayton and his value being lower than anyone here thought. It's not a great package. But it gets us a little more shooting/playmaking, an okay, albeit injury prone C and the hope is we're looking at addition by subtraction. By no means is that a given though.
