Because I don't want Leinart 2.0. I don't want all of the hype and nonsense that comes with potentially picking the wrong guy and having him flame out while the media rips him for taking a hot tub pick.
5 years from now I don't want to be edging 40 talking about our huge draft bust.
I could see that if it were possible for two guys to be identical in personality and then put in identical situations. But Mayfield falling to the Cardinals wouldn't be any more criticized than Leinart falling to the Cardinals.
I don't think any reasonable pundit/expert was harping on the Cardinals for taking Leinart anyway. They didn't trade up to get him or even plan on him being there. It was a surprise and the only reasonable thing for the Cardinals to do at that point. And, had Dennis Green remained the coach who knows how Leinart would have turned out? Whisenhunt/Haley coming in and inheriting a young QB that wasn't right for them didn't do Leinart any favors, regardless of how much Leinart brought on himself for example.
So, Mayfield being taken at #15 is not going to be met with any criticism IMO. First and foremost, Wilks likely won't be out the door after just one year so Mayfield won't have to be a savior. Of the franchise or of the HC's job. Second, he'll be coming to a much more supportive QB room and situation than Leinart was put in. Third, Bradford and he would have an obvious connection that seems like it would be a plus.
Mayfield isn't a sure thing but he's a top prospect and I don't see any reason why the Cardinals would pass on him if he fell to them. I think they'd be criticized FAR more if they didn't take him if he was there at 15.
