To trade Dudley for a pick that's about the same pick as Dudley was drafted means that your saying Dudley only lived up to his draft selection. IMO Dudley, out played his draft selection...by A LOT.

JD is the classic "3 & D" guy with great hustle, good rebounder and a funny, good coachable player to have in the locker room.

He's worth at least a top 15 pick imo.

The issue is Dudley would appeal most to good teams that need depth. If you have a top 10 pick and you're in a full rebuild, Dudley may not appeal to your team.

So that limits who you could potentially flip him to. IE Indiana, Boston, Atlanta, Brooklyn, New York, etc would all be good fits for him potentially but they're picking 16 and later.

Maybe OKC would be a fit, but I feel like they've been so good at drafting they may want to take their chances in the draft.

Just saw this on another board from a Cleveland fan.

#1 and Varajao for #5, Gortat, and Dudley.

Hmmm. I think I might take that one.

I think I might try and get a third team involved and get a second pick out of it rather than Varajao.

It really depends on who the Suns would take at #1. Well, and whether Varejao can come back healthy. In general, the Suns should be trying to trade their existing players for more picks, not for minor upgrades in the draft.

Picks in future drafts would work, as well. It's a long-term dev plan. A second 1st-round pick could be protected to some extent (top 3, top 5, whatever).

You're worth what you can get. If we were trading Dudley to sunsfan88 he'd be worth a top 15 pick but that doesn't mean he's worth that to any of the teams that actually have a top 15 pick available. Again, he's coming off a bad year on a horrible team. You could argue that he was our 5th best player last year and even if you want to ignore his horrible first couple of months, he was still no more than 3rd best. I don't think that screams top 15 to the rest of the league.

I think he brings more value to the team than your average number 15 selection but that doesn't mean he'll bring that in trade. If there's some team out there with a specific need for a great role player, he'd be an excellent choice for them but that's not usually the missing piece teams are searching for. There are a lot more Dudleys than there are superstars and most teams with top 15 picks are in need of more than a Dudley. IMO, if you really want a top 15 pick for Dudley, you have to trade him in season when teams might be targeting that specific need.

Steve

Yep. You can't overthink these things. You need to make moves that make your team better. Its possible to "lose" a trade, but have a better team when its over.

I remember when the Suns traded Gilliam for Rambis or even the Diamonbacks with the Upton trade. Its like when you play chess, sometimes you will sacrifice a valuable piece to win the game. But winning the game is the point.

So, you don't worry about where Dudley was drafted when you trade him, you just concern yourself with getting something that will put this team closer to a championship.

Looks like he was worth better than a top 10 pick...he was worth Eric Bledsoe :D

The most important question is how old is this guy really, might be 27 already.

Also based on the videos and the picture above he does not look even close to Lebron in terms of Physique, also doesn't look anywhere near 245lbs.
He's barely 21. And the Mavs already got him for their summer league.

The mystery man is Alexandre Paranhos, a 21 year old Brazilian player. Apparently, he is from the same neighborhood as Leandro Barbosa, and both Leandro and his brother Artur have taken an interest in Paranhos. At 6'8 with a reported 7'3 wingspan(!), Paranhos seems to be the prototypical long, athletic and extremely raw foreign project. I have no idea what exactly Dallas has here, but Paranhos is an intriguing guy.

I could have googled that myself but his true age and what papers say are a completely different story for an unknown brazilian athlete.

Huh?

I don't know how much you're exposed to out in your European bubble, but for him to be even in this country, he needs to have his Brazilian passport at the very least, and have had to show his papers to the Mavs to be technically employed by them.

I highly doubt, as corrupt as South American governments can seem, that they'd issue a faked passport just so some unknown NBA prospect can get better press, or that the Barbosa brothers would risk (U.S.) Federal charges by paying someone at the passport office in Brazil to issue a fake passport.

Even better, I doubt the Mavs would try to downplay his age, if indeed he's already than what's being reported. I mean, what's in it for them besides [eventual] bad PR?

The Brazilian government does not have to be involved at all. His family can just lie, or he can just claim he is some younger relative on all of his paper work.

Not saying this guy actually did any of that, but it happens all the time with these same south american (and especially Caribbean) countries with baseball prospects.

lol

faked passports are VERY common in brazil and it does not need to involve the Barbosa's at all.

Why do you think that many times european top class soccer teams ask for teeth or bone testing to determine the true age of brazilian talents when they seem physically mature for a young age.

Oh wow.

I stand corrected.

I found this: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3916960

I guess I'm the one in the "bubble." Then again, I follow neither baseball or soccer, so I didn't know crap like this exists, much less in such a spotlighted field (no pun intended).

I was merely focusing on the legalities of lying about your entry details into the USA, and the thought that such entities under such a microscope would vet their new hires better; this case is partly true in baseball now, since they'll be doing DNA testing, but I don't know how advanced and aware NBA teams are to this.

Yeah, I am not sure how hard the NBA looks into some of these guys, getting players from south and central america is a relatively recent development in the NBA. But at the same time I think NBA teams probably put all their roster selections under a bit more of a microscope given they only have 12-15 guys on a team, where baseball has well over 100 in their organization.

Also its hard to imagine some 6'8' athletic freak slipping through the cracks, going unnoticed until he was already at an advanced age.
