Tony Delk clone.

Having watched him play, that is exactly who he reminds me of.

It isn't a bad thing...just my observation so far.

I also believe he could develop into a very good defensive player, which Delk is not.

I said exactly the same thing and was just about flamed off the board.

I guess it's good to be an Administrator!

The difference is Barbosa is much younger, therefore can develop into a good player. I think once he gains more experience he will be much better at running the offense.

Well I don't think it is a bad thing that he reminds me of Delk. It just means he is far more likely to be a good roleplayer than a legitimate star.

I'm not really understanding this one. I didn't say anything when you compare Barbosa to Tony Delk. I even went back and checked just to make sure. In fact after his second game as a starter I was questioning whether he is really a point guard.

I actually have to say I'm a little bit relieved because I'm more intrigued by Milos Vujanic at point guard, and I was afraid he might not come to the NBA if Barbosa looks like the playmaker of the future. I know that probably doesn't make much sense.

I would agree that right now Barbosa looks like he has the potential to be a better defender than Delk. Tony Delk is capable of playing some pretty staunch defense when he really has to though.

I'm wondering, too, if Barbosa is a Shooting Guard in a Point Guard's body. Tony Delk has experience, but remains that.

Barbosa's three assists in 29 minutes vs. Denver last night doesn't help the Suns.

Well, many people agreed with you. Only the "emotional few" didn't.

It will improve. He is a foreign PG it is no wonder he can't be such a playmaker right now. He needs to improve and learn the game more.

Even if he was a Troy Hudson or Tony Delk , those players don't work bad together with a post-presence.

We want to play inside out with Amare anyway so a good shooting PG is valueable.

Another problem is that there are no pass-first PG's in this years draft except Raymond Felton who is a rather poor shooter.

Well maybe Stephon's cousin Sebastian Telfair will surprise people and enter the draft. But there is so experience with highschool PGs.

Mustafa Shakur is the best PG prospect in college right now but he will stay at least 1 more season.

I agree that Barbosa is more of a 2 right now. I think he will develop a PG game, but it's tough for any rookie to come in and run an NBA team. To expect a rookie (who is still learning english) to come in mid-season with almost no playing time and be able to make it look like we hadn't just traded one of the top PG's in the league (for crap) would be a little crazy.

i agree, if vujanic is the real thing, then having barbosa develop into a troy hudson/bobby jackson type would be a good thing. spark off the bench.

also, i think the #1 pg prospect in high school is now that shawn livingston kid. 6'6" pass-first pg. there is thought that he may declare. intriguiging.

I thought Barbosa was supposed to be the second coming of Gary Payton?

Barbosa's more of a scoring lead guard than a PG, so in that way he's a lot like Delk. However, he's longer than Delk is, and quicker than Bobby Jackson, and less experienced than either of them were on their very first days in the NBA. I'm not ready to move him along just yet. ;)

I think everybody agrees that, in the near future at least, Barbosa is best suited to be the Suns' third guard. The Suns weren't able to make that work with Delk, but the Kings and Mavericks have shown other teams how to make it work, and I hope (thanks to D'Antoni) the Suns offense of the future will look more like those teams than the Tony Delk Suns teams.

If that's what happens, everything works out well enough, because it opens the starting PG spot for Vujanic. If Vujanic isn't all that, then the Suns will have another high draft pick in the 2005 draft to pick his replacement.

I still think Chris Duhon is going to make somebody a decent pass-first PG someday, but the Suns probably won't have a draft pick low enough to take him. I guess they can trade down if they get stiffed by Vujanic and PG is what they need.

I think Barbosa will be a better ballhandler than Delk as well. Plus there aren't many guys in the league who average 8 assists a game. If Barbosa ends up being a starting quality point guard who can get you 15 and 6, it wouldn't be so bad. However, that being said, I can picture him winding up a lot better than that. It's really too early to tell. At the moment, he's just an extremely young player that has some ability to contribute now, and a lot of potential.

F-Dog, I also like Chris Duhon. I would not be surprised one bit if he's a late first-round draft pick by the time the draft actually rolls around.

I think the Delk comparison is ridiculous. He reminds me more of Gilbert Areanes. Tony Delk never saw a shot he didn't like. Barbosa has quite a bit of playmaking ability especially for a 19 year old. Barbosa is already twice as good of a defender as Delk was and he's hardly a finished product. I also don't like the Barbosa and Delk comparision because Delk has never been more then a role player his whole career and I really see Barbosa as a starter for us in the future (as well as now).

I think Barbosa is doing just fine. He has lots of good points about his game.

Nobody argued that doesn't have good attributes or points, but he is simply not a point guard.

He is a better shooter than Delk, he is better defender than Delk, and he is twice as quick as Delk, but he is still not a point guard.

When we aquired him, I thought he would work really well playing in the backcourt alongside Penny (who is a point guard).

I agree with those of you who compare him to Troy Hudson/ Bobby Jackson.

Are we starting to get the same BS discussions about Barbosa that we already have about JJ.

He is a young player. You saw 4 games that he started at most and he is a foreign PG who still learns english and you already claim he is not a PG, he will only be better than Delk etc?

Exactly.

I also think Raymond Felton is a good point guard prospect. His shot isn't great, but he was able to average 30 points in HS. The North Carolina team dosen't exactly need him to be much of a scorer at the moment....

Barbosa is not only inexperienced, he is REALLY, REALLY YOUNG. I have been very impressed with how well he has played considering he did not even spend time in Europe.

I have to admit I have no idea how Felton fits into this conversation. Even assuming Barbosa is better suited as combo guard, the Suns already have Eisley (who is not likely to be leaving) and the rights to Milos Vujanic.

Felton was mentioned earlier here, and although the suns don't need him, he is one of my favourates in NCAA.

Well his game may evolve beyond a Tony Delk-esque style, but that is where it currently is.

I am not a Delk hater...I think Delk is an outstanding bench guy for a good team.

At the start of the season I was all for playing Barbosa at SG. If he had been just a little more accomplished as a PG he would have been a lottery pick. The kid is 19 years old and has only limited international experience. He is actually doing a lot better at PG than I expected (virtue of low expectations .:D ).
