Barcelona star proves Hansi Flick right with brilliant display vs Dortmund

Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick saw a key selection decision in the club’s latest line-up fully vindicated on Wednesday night.

This came owing to the performance put forth by midfield starlet Fermín López.

Youngster Fermín was for his part afforded his latest starting berth this evening.

This came as Barcelona welcomed Borussia Dortmund to Catalunya’s capital, for a Champions League quarter-final first-leg clash.

When all was said and done, the Blaugrana absolutely ran riot, to all but book their place in the semi-finals of European football’s premiere club competition.

Owing to goals on the part of Raphinha, Robert Lewandowski (2) and Lamine Yamal, Barca emerged on the right side of a 4-0 result.

And whilst it is the hosts’ explosive front three who will in turn take the majority of the headlines post-match, the performance of another Barca star should not be overlooked.

Hansi Flick was left with one major decision to make in his XI to face Dortmund, in the attacking midfield role.

With Dani Olmo sidelined through injury, Barcelona’s headmaster was forced to choose between Gavi, and the aforementioned Fermín López.

With the former fresh off a Man of the Match performance against Real Betis over the weekend, it therefore came as something of a surprise when it was Fermín who was given the nod.

But to say that the 21-year-old went on to justify his inclusion would be something of an understatement.

Fermín enjoyed nothing short of a brilliant performance against Dortmund, linking midfield to attack with poise, class and ruthless efficiency.

The Spanish international sent in the free-kick which culminated in the game’s opener, before also laying on the assist for his side’s third.

And yet, Fermín’s performance was so much more than the stats, a complete showcase of how to play in the no.10 role.

Widespread credit on Wednesday night should go the way of not only the youngster, but manager Hansi Flick, too.
