Brownie Points: Barnes gives Suns flexibility, even at point
Jerry Brown, Tribune
Matt Barnes will fill a lot of holes for the Suns next year. Might he help fill the backup point guard spot as well?
The Suns aren’t going to get a good enough point guard in free agency. Even if Goran Dragic comes this fall, he won’t be ready for the workload Phoenix envisions for Steve Nash’s backup.
But Barnes’ ability to play power forward and even shooting guard in addition to small forward makes the Suns more flexible and might give them some interesting options.
Are both Boris Diaw and Leandro Barbosa now necessary on the roster? Would the Bulls, who are still sparring with Luol Deng on a contract and looking to move Kirk Hinrich’s contract, entertain the idea of swapping Hinrich for Diaw (they have almost identical contracts) and then go after some center depth with their last roster spot?
There is no indication that the Suns and Bulls have talked. But Hinrich is a name that has intrigued the Suns in the past, and they will have to get creative in picking up a point guard. Barnes’ pleasantly unexpected arrival gives them more chips to play.

I'd be curious as to what happened to Kirt and the Bulls in general. 2007-08 Kirt had a very good year and I'm not awre of any great family tragedy for him to cause a decline.
2006-07 16.6 ppg 44.8% and 41.5% for three, 6.3 assists
2007-08 11.5 ppg 41.4% and 35.0% for three, 6.0 assists
I remain skeptical that the Bulls make this deal. I'm very impressed with Rose, but it is a lot to expect a rookie to start from the git to.
He did get married in July 2007 but that's not exactly in the "tragedy" category.
#1 overall picks should be starters--right away, imo. Otherwise, you have picked a project at that position which would be foolish. Every scouting report that existed on Rose said he is ready for prime time now.
You're obviously still single.

Hmmm. I called for Matt Barnes last offseason. I'm VERY glad we got him. As many of you know, I had been for losing Marion for a LONG time and I proposed Barnes as a way to replace Marion. Well, now we'll see how my plan ultimately works out....
If D'Antoni was coach, I think Barnes might see a lot of action at PF. I'm not quite convinced we'll see that kind of lineup all that often under Porter, but you never know. If his three point shooting returns, he might see some minutes when the Suns need to get as many shooters on the floor as they can.
You're reading me wrong. I don't care where Marion is put in position on the floor, he's a SF, period. That is the role I envisioned Barnes coming in as and that's exactly what he'll be....
Personally, I run Nash-Bell-Barnes-Stoudemire-O'Neal as the starting lineup with Hill as the new 6th man followed by Barbosa, Diaw, Lopez, Strawberry, Tucker and whatever else....
Where's the beef? Of those listed only Amare, Shaq, Lopez and Diaw are legit 4/5 guys. That's a lot of pressure on a rook to be a night-in-night out force. I need one more legit (top 10 guy) big to feel very comfy in my lazyboy.
I agree however i would like to start Barbs over Bell if possible. Nash can get Barbs some quality looks from the 3 pt line in addition to not asking Barbs to create or run anything. Barnes can guard anyone that Bell's been asked to guard in the past. This way you've got Hill,Bell,Diaw & Lopez off the bench which is a force to be reckoned with. Hill can score as well as run some offense thru Diaw in the post who can find Bell who's a threat from deep. I hope this is the lineup we see in November. You're reading me wrong. Is Barnes really a top notch defender? I've not seen him play, but is he up there with Bell and Marion?
