I was reading an article at espn about the '9ers cap problems and the cost of certain players. The article talked about re-signing Ahmed Plummer and said it would take at least $4 million/year, if not more, to keep him. My question is, how much better is Plummer than Barrett? Does Barrett deserve close to the same money?

I think plummer is way over-rated...but I see he is considered a starting pro bowl cornerback this season...so - seems the opinion of plummer is way higher than barrett..not sure it is justified - but I have only seem him play a few times this season (plummer)..

I think Barrett is a much better c.b. than Plummer, and it is going to take about that much to resign him. From what I understand one of the reasons he didn't sign last week when all the new contracts were being handed out was he and his agent feel they can fair much better on the open market.

D......love that signature. So do we show Barrett the money, throw in to that for a "shut-down" corner, or do both and cut Starks? I haven't watched a game (unless you count Game day [email protected] ) since some time last year and don't have a clue. Of course, if I had watched every game, I still wouldn't have a clue......:D

My thinking is resign Barrett, cut Starks(the highest salary on the team this year),and find a servicable middle tier c.b. in the off season. Renaldo Hill has played well at times this year, but I would rather use him in nickel situations. You can never have enough corners in the N.F.C. wild, wild, west.

if we can replace Barrett - and I think we can actually upgrade his position - he can play ten yards off the reciever for someone else for 4 milliona year.

I think that's more what he's asked ot do, not what he's able to do. Another thing to remember is Barrett is a hitter. He sticks his nose in on running plays, and that's hard to find in a corner. I still think 2 corners need to be brought in if Barrett is unsigned.

yeah but why do you think he's asked to give that much cushion - most times it's because a defensive coordinator isn't comfortbale with your speed and ability to play close to the man for fear of giving up a big play - now Barrett doesn't have the speed to be paid number one corner and is one of the main reasons I believe he either plays so far back or is instructed to do so - bottom line is that a 4 million dollar corner has to have speed IMO - that is such an essential quality needed in a corner, especially in our division and that is something Barrett doesn't have.

It is the soft zone scheme Marmie plays. He played with Starks, who has the speed. Yu can count the guys who can play press coverage well consistanlty and not get burned on the two hands I'm typing on in this league.

So I think we get to where we like Barrett, but not at the salary he's expecting.... and I think that's what may happen. But that does not make him a bad corner in the least bit.

I never said he was a bad corner - on the contrary in most of my posts on the subject I think it would be a wise move to get him baker at 2-2.5 mill per - I just thinks he's probably asking for a lot more.

That's funny. True, but funny.

I think Barrett is a solid (albeit not a "shut-down") corner.

But, IMO, the bottom lineis that the Cards develop a dominant front 7.

I hope they sign Barrett, but with a great front seven, and good defensive schemes (which I think they have done as of late) the Cards can "create" good corners. It is amazing how good a corner looks when an opponent's QB is pressured into making bad throws.

I completely agree - I still think the front four needs a bona-fide NFL proven stud - and no I'm not talking about a loud-mouthed aging, over the hill, will cost way too much, Warren Sapp.

The short list of good ones.
Chris McAlister
Antoine Winfield
Charles Woodson
Champ Bailey
Troy Vincent
Bobby Taylor
Fernando Bryant
Shawn Springs
Ahmed Plummer

Not to shabby for this years free agent crop, although I'm sure a few of these guys will be franchise players.
