Baseball tonight on the future of the Diamondbacks

Peter Gammons said if the Diamondbacks don't get things started soon they could be looking to trade some veterans like Finley sooner than later.

Also, I heard on ESPN radio today that the Diamondbacks are talking with Atlanta on a Randy for Sheffield trade. I don't believe Jerry or Loe would make that trade.

If the Diamondbacks are looking to next year I say play the young guys and sign two big free agents for next year. They will have some money to spend with Williams and Womack gone, and who knows what veteran with a big contract could be included in a trade this year.

I'd say they were 1 for their last 4. Hitting around .250 isn't good in baseball.

Kim trade: too early to judge

Durazo trade: Still a little early, but not looking good.


What are the other trades?

I would rate the Gonzo and Schilling trades are heavily favoring the Dbacks.

Mantei and Womack trades overall positive

Bautista trade positive.

Miller trade was salary dump - were just off-loading an expendable part, so I say that is positive, regardless of what we got back.

No but if you have a fair agent you will get paid 3 Mil a year.

Yeah, Miller's didn't really count because the D-Backs weren't looking to do anything but dump salary. And Miller’s was a good salary to dump. That one was not included.

What was included:

Albie Lopez trade (bad), Mike Myers (good), Durazo-Dessens (bad), Kim-Hillenbrand (bad)

You say it’s too early for the Kim-Hillenbrand deal, but keep in mind that good GM’s don’t like to trade pitching value straight up for hitting value. With that being said, Kim was the 3rd best pitcher on this staff and Hillenbrand was Boston’s #6 hitter.

Seems like a no-brainer to me.

I also think the Hillenbrand trade was a mistake, but you also have to look at the financial ramifications when judging a trade these days.

The Alpo trade was more of a wash, if anything. Alpo did pitch well in some big games for us. And Bierbrodt hasn't really shown much in TB.

Bierbrodt was released by Tampa Bay - hard to call that trade bad, as Nick as not done anything there.

its hard to fault Bierbrodt on that though, he did get shot a couple of times while in Tampa. Im not saying he was going to be great, but he did have potential, just needed more refining.

Agreed - the shooting set him way back.

But it also shows that getting upset over trading "potential" for known is not always bad - see Jack Cust. At the time, the trade was lambasted. But Cust has never panned out, and Myers has been (not recent games withstanding) solid.

You cant just look at trades. Obviously the trades that brought us
Gonzo and Schilling have outweighed trades that did not work out. Finley and Johnson have been good free agent pickups. while Stottlemyre was very bad. Where the team got in trouble was by overpaying too many players. Hopefully that will not happen in the future. Hard to argue with results in 5 years with 3 division titles and a Championship
