I'm starting to think it will never happen, the people like John Junker at the Fiesta Bowl and his counterparts in New Orleans, Pasadena, and Miami have too much pull to make their games essentially meaningless. Having a playoff system would do just that.

I listened to Junker this AM on the radio defending himself from pissed off Sun Devils as he threw the Rose Bowl under the bus for ASU not getting a bid. Well, Junker it's you and your brethren's insistence on keeping this archaic system in place so you can sleep better in your stupid yellow jackets that contributed just as much as the Rose Bowl's reluctance to break tradition or ASU's lack of traveling ability to this fiasco.

And some may ask why I'm going to bat for ASU on this considering my ties to Arizona. Well, it's pretty simple really. If it can hapen to ASU or Cal or Oregon then it can happen to Arizona when and if that day comes after we mercifully sh-tcan Mike Stoops.

You would be suprised just how many AD's and Coaches dont really want a playoff either. The big schools out there are pretty content knowing they have a good shot-based on history and popularity-to get to that NC Game every year. Sad really.

Coaches are concerned that a long playoff system hurts recruiting in two ways: 1. They lose December time to recruit (which is what they are all doing right now-recrutiing) and 2. Being seeded #1 for a playoff and say losing to #10 in front of a national audience will sway a kid's mind immediatly. Keep in mind they are competing against teams in this playoff that they would probably be competing with in recruiting as well.

I am all for a playoff, I just know that the idea that most AD's and coaches are for it isnt true.

Yeah I knew that, but as I was watching it I couldn't believe they were gonna stick to that rule. If a team is deserving, then so be it.

I just don't understand how those guys sleep at night picking Illinois over Missouri.

Once again, a playoff is the right thing to do. LSU, USC and Oklahoma are playing the best ball right now. Georgia, Mizzou, WV and maybe even Hawaii could pull an upset. Kansas and Illinois are a joke. VT and Ohio state are borderline.

This system has to go.

Voting a National Championship after Bowl games played as much as a month and a half since some teams have played a game is stupid. Has been ever since the idiots at AP caved in to the fans and started this whole mess.

The only thing dumber than the BCS is playing the Stanley Cup finals when its 100 degrees and the World Series when its 32 degrees outside.

When I hear coaches speak on the matter I often feel like they are just standing up for the status quo because that's what their employers want. I would bet many actually do dislike this system. But then again, this system also pays those big salaries.........

And maybe certain coaches find some comfort in knowing that all they have to do is schedule as many creampuffs as possible and try not to lose.

Got several opinions to express:

1. The BCS is not and has never been a mess. College football is, first and last, about making money. The power conferences and schools make the most money for many reasons, which I'll state later.

2. The bowls are about making money, as much as they can. Their backers, movers and shakers, are local power businessmen and local governments lusting after sales and use taxes. The hotel/motel/rental car/restaurant/airline/others matter a great deal.
And the bowls themselves need huge revenues to pay multiple huge salaries to their top people and employees.

3. Some teams travel well, bringing huge legions of fans with money. Those teams are coveted. Most of the big mid-western schools come to mind here. Other teams travel poorly, with little fan drag-along ability. Miami is one. So too are Alabama and LSU.

4. I am an ASU alumnus and had Fiesta bowl tickets for about seven years. But now that the Fiesta bowl is big-time, they don't need ASU anymore. The game is pre-sold out anyway and the local business/government backers make more money if ASU is not in the game here.

5. ASU could have forced themselves into a big pay day but were not yet talented enough to do so. Patience. It should come.

6. ASU does not travel well. That's not a secret. Let's see how many of our Holliday bowl ticket allotments we return unused, shall we?

7. The ASU-Texas match-up is a very good one and San Diego is a nice town to visit. Let's see how many of us go.

8. The claim that a play-off system would increase revenues for all is unsubstantiated opinion, I believe, even if done inclusive of the bowl system.

Miami and ASU still will not travel well and how many games will the fans of any winning teams be able to afford to attend?
Do you think sponsors will enjoy seeing half-empty round 2 playoff games?
Can TV revenue overcome that?

Will the power conferences willingly give up revenue to other conferences, just to crown a "true" champion?

9. If a playoff ever makes financial sense, it will happen. Until then, it won't.

The cupcakes served their purpose for Kansas.

And Ohio State as well.

Kent State (3-9) Youngstown State (I-AA) Akron (4-8)?

Even Washington which finished the season at 4-9 and last in the PAC 10 turned out to be a cupcake.

At least Kansas played 4 Div I teams and a conference Champion in Central Michigan.

But neither schedule is anything to brag about. These are the kind of games the BCS has forced on us.

It looks like those questions have been answered with ASU selling out their allotment.
From the azcentral.com article:

If a Sun Devil fan wishes to purchase tickets for the game they are encouraged to buy through the University of Texas ticket office online or by phone at 1-800-982-BEVO (2386).

I guess Texas doesn't travel well either.

My playoff system.

16 teams. Winners of all the super conferences get auto bids. (This is kind of redundant since these teams will ALMOST always be in the top 16)

Teams are seeded 1-16. In the first 2 rounds games are played on the higher seeds home field. Ticket revenues must be shared 50/50 with the visiting team. Semi finals and championship are played on predetermined neutral fields. (BCS Stadiums?) If teams make it this far the games will sell out.

Being a true national championship some network will pay record numbers for the TV rights. The Championship game being a true championship game will take on Super Bowl status. All playoff games will be played on Weekends.

If you start right after the season the whole thing can wrap up the first week of January. Don't give me any of that bull about the poor kids having to play 4 more weeks or not getting to spend the holidays at home. The guys that play for these schools are hardcore football players and would rather be playing in a true playoff than home for the holidays.

There can still be a full load of Consolation Bowls that can be played on weekdays in December.

The NCAA and Big Time TV could do this if they wanted to. My guess is that it has already been explored and for whatever reason they determined that they make more money with the current set up.

8 conference champions and 8 at large. That would be awesome. The controversy over the at large teams would dwarf what we get now regarding the two teams selected for the BCS title game. Huge publicity for the NCAA.

ACC, Big 12, Big East, Big 10, Pac 10, SEC, get in.

2 highest ranked conference champions from the Mid American, Conf. USA, Mountain West and WAC also get in.

Or something similar.

It would put some meaning back into regular season and conference play.

ASU tends to travel pretty well to California, at least to USC and UCLA. This picture only shows the ASU section, but there were patches of ASU fans all over the stadium. I am up at the top. Nothing more fun than winning on the road.
