Bears | Ayanbadejo suspended for four games
Thu, 9 Aug 2007 11:20:31 -0700

Brad Biggs, of the Chicago Sun-Times, reports Chicago Bears FB Obafemi Ayanbadejo will be suspended for the first four games of the NFL regular season for failing a drug test. Ayanbadejo was informed Tuesday, Aug. 7, that he lost an appeal to the league for having an anti-estrogen component in his system during a random drug test back in January while he was a member of the Arizona Cardinals. Ayanbadejo said he plans to pursue legal action against the maker of Max LMG, as he believes it was not properly labeled and led to his positive test. "What was in my system was not a steroid," he said. "There's a difference between an anabolic steroid and an anti-estrogen component. But the league considers that a related substance. I took a supplement that had an anti-estrogen component and I did not know it was contained in the supplement."

C'mon, NFL players. You have a list of approved substances and supplements. How hard is it to choose from that list? If a trainer offers you a supplement, look at the list, if it's not on the list then don't take it.

I swear, this drives me crazy sometimes. Kudos to 'Femi for pursuing legal action against the company, though. That's what you do to re-establish your integrity.

I am always amazed players don't just go through their training department for thier suppliments.....that's why teams have trainers!!!

I realize to some that I may come off as a little biased here, but I have known Femi for 15 years and we were roomates for 2 after H.S. and he never took steroids...

I really do not believe he has or does and there may be something to his claim about Max LMG...

masterphomeg, Femi (now there's some irony to that nickname :) ) was a dependable and decent journeyman FB during his time with the Cardinals.

So he wasn't a power blocker such as the current FB, Smith. Femi fullfilled the role in the fashion that was designed for the offense of which he was a part.

I will add that although he had limited duty, he was a fan favorite during his years with the Card's. There is no need to dis' him just because he is no longer a Cardinal.

Here is Max LMG advertisement, but it does look like there may be a anti-estrogen product in there:

ALRI Max LMG
90 Capsules - Write a Review
By: ALRI

Description

Increase your strength, firm up your muscles, and get fit with MAX LMG, a supplement by ALRI.

As a bodybuilder or athlete, you may have seen the numerous performance enhancers on the market. These supplements include everything from prohormones (which are now illegal) to prosteroids. Why would anyone want to take a performance-enhancing supplement though? The answer is simple: to build up muscle and tone their body.

The problem with many of these supplements is that they were so powerful. The anabolic properties were so intense they were (or should have been) considered illegal. There was an unnatural quality to these supplements, and they needed to be regulated. Thanks to an act signed in 2004, the Anabolic Steroid Control Act, many of the supplements originally deemed as safe were removed from the market.

While some of these products were dangerous others were actually quite helpful and not a risk. Since most supplement manufacturers were classifying these drugs by their references to the anabolic properties, a lot of good products that were not necessarily harmful, but were classified this way were deemed unsafe.

One of the companies affected by the Anabolic Steroid Act of 2004 and Dietary Supplement Health Education Act of 2004 was ALRI (Applied Lifescience Research Industries Inc.). The ALRI supplement Ergomax LMG was an excellent supplement that delivered many positive results. However, this unusual pheromone blend was pulled from the shelf due to the negative light being shed on supplements of any kind at the time.

Luckily, ALRI was able to develop a new, more acceptable version called Max LMG. Max LMG is composed of 13-ethyl-3-methoxy-gona-2,5(10)-diene-17-one. Max LMG is a progestin. Unlike other progestins, Max LMG is free of negative side effects.

ALRI Max LMG is an Anti-Progesterone Supplement
This supplement increases your libido while decreasing estrogen and any estrogen effects. Just one dose of Max LMG lasts between 6-10 hours ensuring your sexual performance stays up to par as long as you need!

Of course, the main purpose of ALRI Max LMG is the ability to add strength to your muscles, sculpt your body, and get toned. The chiseled muscle appearance plus the active libido that keeps you going strong for a long time, virtually guarantees a healthy sex life you will be able to keep up with in stride.

I need to start selling pill that will make you stronger, help you lose wieght, increase your memory, give you an extra 2", regrow your hair, and make you irrestable to ladies.

I'll call it "Big Slick" or "BS" for short.

People will be throwing money at me. I will just fill the capsule with shots of alcohol and they will be so drunk they won't have a clue it's not working.

PFT makes it sound like Femi believes the failed test is why the Cards released him.

Bears | Ayanbadejo suspended for four games

Does the ad say it contains the anti-estrogen? Come on Femi. Reading Comprehension. :)

Somers' blog implies that this may be the reason Cards released him.
He's guessing...

It may have made the decision easier, but anyone with a brain can figure that Femi's game doesn't mesh well with the style of offense that Whiz wants to run.

This is why I love football. In baseball you can be a junkie, break the most prestigous records in all of sports (single season HR record, all time HR record) and be allowed to do it with no puishment whatsoever.

In football you get suspended for a 1/4 of the season for using illeagal substances even if they aren't steroids.

Hey Selig you getting this??? Nevermind you already lost me as a fan and I will not allow my son to watch those cheating junkies ever. God I hate baseball and I can't stand Selig for runining the game. Seriously professional wrestling is more real than baseball.

I liked Femi on the field, but the guy definitely needs to read about what is in whatever he puts in his body.

A little research and he'd be playing rather than sitting. :doi:

Bears' FB Ayanbadejo suspended 4 games

By John Mullin | Tribune staff reporter 2:18 PM CDT, August 9, 2007

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. - The Bears got some bad news Thursday when the NFL suspended fullback Obafemi Ayanbadejo four games for violating the league's policy on anabolic steroids and related substances.

In a situation eerily reminiscent of those involving Bears quarterback Jim Miller in 1999 and fullback Daimon Shelton, Ayanbadejo, brother of Bears linebacker and Pro Bowl special teams player Brendon, tested positive for a banned substance that was contained in an over-the-counter supplement MaxLMG, billed as an aid for recovery after physical workouts.

"It's unfortunate that someone like myself, who didn't take a steroid, tested positive," Ayanbadejo said. "But it was an anti-estrogen substance that I wasn't aware was in the product and that's something that's on the league's list."

Ayanbadejo took six tests between November 2006 and April 2007, with only the January test returning a positive. He found out about the positive results in April, while under contract with the Arizona Cardinals, who then released him on June 5.

His appeal of the decision was denied and the suspension handed down.

"I did my best to fight it but it got me cut by Arizona," Ayanbadejo said. "After that I explained the situation to Chicago and the organization believed me and gave me a chance to come and compete here, which I appreciate very much."

Ayanbadejo, a solid special teams player and multi-purpose running back, is eligible to play in the preseason but must sit out the first four games of 2007.

This is BS and I feel bad for him.

The NFL needs to change it's policy about over-the-counter meds. Players have to always be on the lookout because you take the wrong cold medicine or the wrong dietary supplement, and you might test positive for something stupid.

Seriously, is an anti-estrogen formula in a pill you buy at Hi-Health really going to make that much of a difference? IMO, if it's over-the-counter, it shouldn't be against league rules.

THIS ONE IS FOR YOU KOC. TIM WE DID IT.
Femi was the only person to ever catch a TD pass from Emmit Smith!! He is an awesome guy off the field as well. After one game we shot the **** for about 20 minutes just discussing our combined hatred for the Rams. Man does he hate them!!!!

I agree 100%. How can any substance be banned that is completely legal?

Disagree. The League HAS to take a strong policy, if only to avoid the tarnish that is hanging over MLB. The players are fully aware of the rules and it's implications, and the need to be extra careful with what they take. On what Femi took, it is very clear that it contained a banned substance, so I have zero sympathy for him. Yeah, it sucks, but players have to read/question any substance they put in their body.

And just because something is legal today doesn't mean it will be legal tomorrow - products are always trying to skirt the edge of the law.

And the NFL has the right to ban any substance, legal or not. If a player doesn't like it, there is always the AFL...
