He didn't look out of bounds
Even if he ended up out of bounds, his forward progress was stopped. The NFL made a big deal about this exact same (well, exactly opposite, I suppose) situation a couple of weeks ago. Some team was trying to get out of bounds to stop the clock, when the defense stood the guy up, but he got out of bounds anyway. The refs kept the clock running claiming the play was over when his forward progress was stopped--in bounds.

The clock should have kept ticking for us by this same logic.
