Okay, so the cameo thread just sparked another thread idea.

What is your favorite/best cast in movie history?

I’ll start with True Romance. Just ridiculous. Christian Slater in his best role, Patricia Arquette, Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson, Dennis Hopper, Christopher Walken, Michael Rappaport, JAMES GANDOLFINI, BRAD PITT, Bronson Pinchot and absolutely perfect pairing of Tom Sizemore and Chris Penn.

that cast gets slightly dinged because it is VERY DUDE heavy, but still an incredible group, all of them giving gonzo performances in one way or another.

okay... your turn!

This is a tough call because a lot of films with "great" casts... aren't really very good films.

As some of you have already provided examples.

But to play along, if you are counting "cameos" as "cast," I would say Around the World in 80 Days... which isn't a great movie, but at least isn't terrible either.

I know it’s a movie series and not a single movie, but the Harry Potter movies are ridiculous if you look at the casts.

Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Tom Felton are working constantly, but then you look at the adults...

Alan Rickman
Gary Oldman
Ralph Fiennes
Richard Harris
Maggie Smith
Kenneth Branagh
Emma Thompson
Warwick Davis
Brendan Gleason
Michael Gambon
Robert Pattinson
John Cleese
John Hurt
David Tennant
Jim Broadbent
David Thewlis
Imalda Staunton
Rhys Ifans
Julie Walters
Jason Isaacs
Julie Christie
Miranda Richardson
Bill Nighy
Ciaran Hinds
Timothy Spall
Helena Bonham Carter
And
Robbie Coltrane

It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World

Spencer Tracy
Milton Berle
Sid Caesar
Buddy Hackett
Ethel Merman
Mickey Rooney
Phil Silvers
Jonathan Winters
Edie Adams
Jim Backus
Jimmy Durante
Peter Falk
Norman Fell
Stan Freburg
Buster Keaton
Don Knotts
Carl Reiner
The Three Stooges
Jack Benny
Jerry Lewis

Those are just the best known cast members. It's full of many more old time actors and comedians that you might not recognize by their names but you'd definitely recognize from other films or TV shows.

I'd go with It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World if by "best cast" we mean big names. But for me, The American President is my favorite overall cast even if it's not necessarily a star-studded group, just beating out Crimson Tide for me.

The Thin Red Line and The grand Budapest Hotel both have large very good casts.

26 of 272. Jonesy from Alien (1979)
The ship cat and unofficial mascot of the USCSS Nostromo is a sci-fi and horror icon — and of the few to survive the deadly xenomorph. Sigourney Weaver may be the lead in Alien, but Jonesy is obviously the star.

27 of 271. Cat from Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961)
Poor no-name slob: He belongs to nobody, and nobody belongs to him. Holly Golightly’s unnamed cat is the ultimate film feline, a fluffy orange sweetheart who, like most cats, observes everything around him with a sort of passive disapproval.

Wait, was that best Cats or Cast?

I added Airplane 2 to this thread earlier and then deleted it because let's face it, it's a disaster flick at heart and they always have loaded casts. But if you haven't seen the movie lately, go through the cast list on IMDB, it's pretty impressive. Probably more TV actors than movie stars but both are well represented - everyone from General Burkhalter to the guy that knocked over the ficus plant in The American President.
