Good Q & A with the ESPN beat writers.

http://espn.go.com/blog/nfcwest/pos...-qa-who-is-the-best-newcomer-to-this-division

Btw, I don't understand why everyone is saying we'll have CJ for 2 years at best. Pass rushers are very hard to come by. Arguably 2nd after QB. Why would you not pay the man to be here long term? He is young & very good. I realize we have others coming up due to be paid but I would pay HB & CJ to be here long term. The WR position is easier to fill & still be productive. We've proven that with rookies. You just don't let someone move on of Chandler Jones' ability. It took us forever to land someone like that.

I agree...if the rusher performs within your system then you keep him.....unless he wants $25mil a year...then kick him to the curb with a taco

I was out this past Saturday with my scouting friend and we were joined by a scout from the Giants. Both could not believe the Cards acquired Jones so cheaply. They said it was an absolute steal by the Cards. Btw, they both really liked Cooper coming out NC and are surprised he hasn't been more successful.

After watching the Cards season on Amazon, I remembered the scene where Keim and Bidwill were talking about Red Bryant and they were wondering why Jax cut him. So I asked.

They only brought him in because he played for the HC in Seattle and they wanted a guy that knew the system for the younger/new guys. Once they were up to speed, Bryant was making too much money, scout admitted they overpaid him, and let him go.

The best part of that article is the reporter who says Goff will be worth 3-4 wins on the field alone this year for the Rams. A rookie QB that played in a completely un NFL like offense in college is going to step in as a rookie and give the Rams 3-4 more wins?

Goff was a good college QB, the system IMO inflated his stats. Smart kid not a great arm though. I am not saying he's going to be terrible mind you but rookie QB's very seldom add that many wins to a team. They had a remarkably low number of TD passes last year if Goff plays the whole year I'm betting he throws more than 11 TD passes, but I'm also betting he throws more than 13 picks. Their offense next year will rise and fall on the legs of Gurley and their ability to find trick plays to get the ball in Austin's hands in space.

On paper, it's a no brainer that CJ is that guy. A Young Pro-bowler Playing a top three position.

We have a ton of cap space to work with in future years. Yes we have guys to sign, but we have the ability to sign probably everybody, and if not, be able to choose who we do.

My guess is, if it works out and I have no reason to think it won't at this point, CJ will be given an extension over just about everyone else.

Next year if the cap goes up 0, and before any re-signings we have $43,778,993 in space. 5th most in league. According to spotrac.

In 2018, if the cap goes up 0 BOTH years, and before any re-signings we have $83,826,220 in space. 2nd most in league. But we should expect that the cap will be about 20-25 million higher, so we're probably looking at ~105 million in cap space for 2018 before any re-signings.

Now we'll have some big contracts to sign from here to there, but we aren't hurting for space.

By contrast
The Seahawks have this
2017: $11,932,154 22nd
2018: $23,271,004 30th

Oh just in case anyone was wondering, for 2018 we have 37 signed, Seahawks 42.

My favorite part of the interview of course was Weinfuss referring to David Johnson as the Cardinal's cowbell.

Yes it makes me sad he's our beat reporter. He's just not very good. I don't think he's insightful. I think he's often wrong (like CJ starting this year over DJ), he's not a good writer, he seems nervous on camera. I miss Prisco.

There is always a surprise coming. IMO we will sign most of our guys. The front office has done a great job in having a plan and getting it done. Jones will remain a Card with a new 3 year deal. I haven't been here in awhile. Most likely having a heart transplant in the few weeks. But I'll be watching everybody and seeing all your great posts.

We should have a lot more cap space shouldn't we, when it comes time for Fitzsimmons to retire. He can't play too much longer, can he?

Weinfuss sucks, but Somers and Jurecki are outstanding and more than make up for what the others lack.

Truth be told, I can't remember the last time I read anything that Weinfuss has written as I make an ernest effort to avoid his material.
