There are two ALF themes. The first one has the major cool Vinnie Colaiuta on drums with a killer lick. It was considered a fusion-y tune even with the piano playing the lead melody because the bass/drums combo gets way funky. The second one is a super lame 6/8 version lite jazz version.

My favorite TV themes:

- Barney Miller
- Night Court
- Sanford and Son
- Hawaii 5-0
- Star Trek: Next Gen
- Rockford Files
- The Courtship of Eddie's Father
- The Simpsons
- Andy Griffith ("Let's Go Down to the Fishin' Hole")
- The Jeffersons
- Fat Albert

I dunno...I never really looked at TV theme music as being either good or bad. My problem is when a show changes their theme music. That usually doesn't work for me.

That was the first one I thought of. Back in the 70s, my dad used to dance around the house to that theme music when the show came on. :)

Welcome Back Kotter
Sanford and Son
Gilligan's Island
Brady Bunch
Diff'rent Strokes
All in the Family
The Jeffersons
WKRP in Cincinnati
Cheers
M*A*S*H
Andy Griffith Show
Sesame Street
The Love Boat
Dukes of Hazzard
Happy Days
Laverne and Shirley
Beverly Hillbillies
Taxi

Just a few of my favorites, off the top of my head. If you know the words and can sing along or can't get the song out of your head, it must be pretty good (or at least effective).

And who hasn't been caught singing the "Movin On Up", "The Brady Bunch", or "Beverly Hillbillies" themes.

All good choices, though I especially like the ones in bold.

Just a good ol' boys, never meanin' no harm.
Beats all you never saw, been in trouble with the law, since the day they was born

Haven't seen that show in 30 years, but can still sing that tune...

I'd have to go with the theme song from Firefly as my favorite but I'd put Dimitri Tiomkin's Rawhide theme and Suicide is Painless (M*A*S*H) as close seconds.

The worst, perhaps the theme from The Patty Duke Show. I only nominate it because it's been ripped off/parodied by just about everybody.

Not written (obviously) as a theme song but "Paint it Black" by the Stones. Opening credits of Tour of Duty. Perfect use of the song. Perfect

Removed, I understand, from the DVD versions of the series. Find someone who recorded them on their VCR at home. The series was not only the best TV ever made about Vietnam but they used the original versions of the Vietnam era songs.

Who's the black private dick
That's a sex machine to all the chicks?
Shaft, ya, damn right

Who is the man that would risk his neck
For his brother man?
Shaft, can you dig it?

Who's the cat that won't cop out
When there's danger all about?
Shaft, right on

They say this cat Shaft is a bad mother
Shut your mouth
But I'm talkin' 'bout Shaft
Then we can dig it

He's a complicated man
But no one understands him but his woman
