Yet another among a string of good actors. It is guaranteed that I will miss one, but still leaving the poll limited to 10 choices.

I am going with Big. It was a cornerstone in making Hanks a big-time Hollywood player.

Oh I read the question as, what was his best all time performance... not which one jump started his career... :p

It's hard to beat Forrest Gump, but his character in Philadelphia does--just phenomenal acting.

definately not close to being his best movie, but,

the fact that his main supporting carachter was a volleyball made me vote for cast away

Tough to choose, but Philadelphia first, then Forrest. Tom Hanks is one of my favorite actors. He just seems to be a good guy, and usually chooses really good movies. He must have an amazing agent.

Actually, most of his choices recently have been suspect. 3 years ago, and you would have been correct.

He is still an amazing actor, and one of the best alltime.

I voted Big, but it was a very tough choice between that and Forrest Gump. In both of these rolls, he did such an amazing job of becoming the character. I only voted Big because I feel it is a teeny bit more difficult to do such a perfect job of showing how a child would respond and behave to being thrown in the adult world than how a few-french-fries-short-of-a-happy-meal person makes it in the real world. IMO, both are very difficult to portray in such a great way, yet Tom Hanks did them both!

Tom Hanks is one of the best when it comes to getting into the character. I dont like it when I watch a movie and I cant get into it because I'm distracted by thinking so and so's in the movie. I rarely do that with Tom Hanks - he's that good.

How would you expect me to react when great performances like "Turner and Hooch" and "The Money Pit" are left off the list... Sheesh...

I dont know whether to shake my head, or laugh out loud to this comment.
