I was catching up on sleep and got the text from KTAR saying he signed a 3-year extension. My guess before I fell back asleep was 3y/16M, almost nailed it.

I also wouldn't go so far as to say he's a "liability" in coverage. But I also don't see pass coverage as a top strength of his.
He's instinctive and a playmaker. He's a solid tackler and is fearless. He can play at the line of scrimmage and be very effective. And he can drop back, use his instincts and make plays. But one on one coverage is just not his gig...
Anyway, I do think you nailed it regarding the contract... I also think Tyrann might try to time his deal to match the term of PP21. Which would essentially be a 3 year deal as PP's deal runs thru 2019 IIRC.
I think $8 mil per would be a very fair deal for both sides...

Agree. Let's not kid ourselves but his size does at times hinder what he can do in coverage, but the other things Mitch talks about he does makes up for that. A very good player who IMO will never be a superstar. The kid is hungry to be better.

Agree Bucky... It will be hard for him to reach "superstar" level given his height and the adverse impact that has on his ability to cover at an elite level...
Yet, his story, his talents, his fearlessness and his determination will absolutely guarantee him a very long and prosperous career in the NFL - hopefully all of it with our beloved Cards!!!

Superb signing by Steve Keim who continues to do all he can to identify and re-sign core players.

As for Jerraud Powers, his age and durability issues are one factor, but, his true value is as a nickel CB.

I believe that Rashad Johnson is also considered a core player and that Steve Keim will try to re-sign him before FA starts.

It will be very interesting to see what kind of a tender SK gives to Tony Jefferson. It wouldn't surprise me if SK doesn't sign Jefferson to an extension before FA, he gives Jefferson a 2nd round tender ($2.187M) rather than risk losing him as an RFA without getting any compensation in return (which is the case for undrafted players who are given low tenders).

Having Johnson and Jefferson in the fold allows James Bettcher to continue to play Tyrann Mathieu all over the field. And speaking of Mathieu, SK will be trying to sign him to a long-term deal asap.

Mitch, how wonderful is it that we are witnessing the work of Mike, Steve, and BA all over this franchise now? How nice is it to see that we can have conversations like this instead of lamenting how this one or that one got away from us and will be playing against us now? Good Lord, this is such a far cry from where we came. Who would have ever thought that we, (Cards fans), would ever have such a wonderful time enjoying our team? We are truly blessed.

What's so encouraging, Catfish, is how core Cardinals' players now don't even want to bother testing the FA market. Because Steve Keim has been so accurate at evaluating "fair market value," the players are fine with staying in house. Fair is now fine with them. Like Bethel said, "I didn't want to get greedy." Hallelujah!

If I was a betting man, I would say PP has been directed by the coaching staff to do the following:

1. Secure the ball

2. Pick up gimme yards if available, if not...fair catch

3. Avoid contact as a PR at all costs.

I completely agree with this. Just my opinion, but it appears he has a mandate to 'catch the ball'. Calling him chicken for running out of bounds is misguided. Pretty sure he'd run one back if the opportunity were there.

Edit to add: we need Sam Rosen to call a game. I think he was on the mic for all of PPs returns for TD

.

To Mitch's point, I think HB is the new Earl Thomas and deserves a similar contract!

Solid policy. He would have a TD this season if Spoon would block

Ultimately the vast majority of people won't leave a job they absolutely love for more money elsewhere so long as they are being paid fairly. It speaks volumes about how well the front office evaluates character and personality BEFORE they bring them in to the team and even more about what a great culture and environment that has been created in he clubhouse. Of course, it's easy to make people happy when you are winning.

Mitch, the impact of Keim can't be overstated... However, I believe that the bigger impact is the role Mike Bidwill plays in all of this. Clearly, he allows Keim and BA to do what needs to be done with nothing but complete support and buy-in. They are a perfect team in and of themselves...

Michael Bidwill has been the tone setter, no question, and great point, 82!

I think Steve Keim would evaluate HB's "fair market value" below Earl Thomas and rightfully so, seeing as Thomas got his $10M a year extension following 4 Pro Bowls and 3 1st team All-Pro selections. Thus, this is one of the reason why $8M a year for HB at this point seems reasonable.

That was a few years ago, and the salary cap has gone up. (It's projected to go up another $10M next year) Therefore, even if HB is slightly less than Earl Thomas, those two things mean HB will command at least $10M/year that Thomas is.

He is being mentioned for Defensive Player of the Year. That says superstar to me. The Board comments are undercutting what he will be paid, just like with Bethel.

First, let me get clear, I love the signing. Bethel has been my avatar for awhile. But take look at the last Bethel thread. 3/$10M total was discussed. Just not going to cut it. I said 4/$22M could be the asking price, and that wasn't far off.

Thrilled with the Bethel signing as he is one of my favorite players. It seems to me that we didn't get Bethel on much of a home town discount but that's not an issue IMO.

Honey Badger is becoming a superstar IMO; as someone else posted if you're in the DOY conversation then you are at a star level.

Nice signing by the Cards. If Bethel can develop into a cb he is cheap, and if not, not a huge overpayment for top special teamer.

Mathieu will get a huge deal in his final year.

Jefferson is just guy in a secondary which is vertically challenged. I think he is gone.

Rashad gets re-signed imo. He means more to AZ than other teams.

Powers re-signing depends on cost. I think the team likes him more than people on this board do.

We need youth and length in this secondary. If Bucannon stays at LB, we are super thin.
