As the OLB coach, it will also be very interesting to see what additions are made at that position with Bettcher now as coordinator.

I really like the idea of adding Larry Foote as a coach, Mitch, but I can’t help but think how great it would be to have Adrian Wilson around the team again in some capacity. I think it is extremely important to any sports team in any sport to have some sort of specific culture, and Adrian Wilson basically IS the Cardinals-culture. I know he wants to continue as a player but a part of me really hope the reason Arians is waiting to announce the final coaching staff is that he wants to give Wilson the chance to change his mind.

Sign him on a one day-contract, let him retire as a Cardinal, induct him to the Ring of Honor, add him to the coaching staff, and make him a living Cardinals-legend.

I like the hire from a game standpoint. I like that we stayed in house. Im pretty certain they probably preferred Mike Caldwell for the DC position, but Bowles was able to lure him to NY.

Not that it matters, and understandably so, I thought he looked terrified at his press conference. Being comfortable in front of the media is not a prerequisite to being a good football mind, so im not concerned about it.

Everybody starts somewhere. At one point Bowles and Horton were both year 1 coordinators, and now so is Bettcher.

I am good with that, Gandhi. AW is ROH worthy in my book.

You know, John, this hire is all on BA and I am sure BA knows it. If Bettcher struggles, BA deserves the scrutiny, not Bettcher.

This is why i think BA&SK will do everything they can to bolster the talent and depth on defense, so as to give Bettcher the best possible chance to succeed.

Bodha---I am not so sure about Caldwell---I think if BA was keen on him as DC, TB would have respected BA's wishes.

As for Bettcher's press conference, I saw it differently---i thought he was well composed and very articulate. He even took the time to tell a couple of anecdotes, which typically a coach who is feeling overly nervous would avoid doing, in favor of making a few terse statements and then opening up the floor for questions. Bettcher looked ready for the moment, at least to me.

Its up to Caldwell not Arians. When teams request permission to poach other teams coaches, its just a polite formality. So its not that Todd took Caldwell to NY, its Caldwell chose to leave.

Its my opinion Caldwell wouldve been the easy choice if he were still here. Much older than Bettcher. Coached the ILBs, who have more responsibility in orchestrating the D than the OLBs. He was obviously closer to Todd.

And I recall once Darren Urban mentioning Caldwell as being the most influential behind the scenes coach, in his eyes, aside from Bruce and Todd.

Was Caldwell under contract? If so, then BA had to allow him. Much like our repeated attempts to get Butler from Pittsburgh. The only move that can't be blocked is a promotion to HC.

I dont know, probably. Mightve been going into the final year considering assistant coaches typically get 3 year deals. Either way the point is Caldwell made it clear he wanted to go with Bowles. Were the Cardinals going to say 'you must stay because youre our fall back if we cant get a big name DC after Todd leaves'? Because they couldnt promise Mike the DC position before we got through looking at other DCs available. So in the meantime, Mike is growing more and more sour knowing hes the backup plan?

Mike was assured an assistant HC spot in NY, and the Cards surely just wanted to avoid another situation with Horton.

Where Horton was the backup plan while we interviewed other candidates, and the relationship got toxic.
