BIDWILL LOOKING AT THREE

The talk in league circles is that Arizona Cardinals owner Bill Bidwill currently is floating three names as potential replacements for eventually-to-be-former head coach Dennis Green.

The candidates are USC coach Pete Carroll, Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops, and Bears defensive coordinator Ron Rivera.

Carroll would likely be the most expensive, and he would probably want total control over the football operations. Stoops would likely be the most interested, because he doesn't generate the same aura in coaching circles that he did several years ago, and some thought his window of opportunity at the next level had closed.

We'd previously heard Rivera's name. He'd need to lasso a strong offensive coordinator (we'd suggest Cal coach Jeff Tedford), in order to get the most out of a very talented set of skill-position players.

Stay tuned.

From PFT.

Surprised that Vermeil as GM/consultant with Sauders as HC isn't mentioned. The interest in Vermeil has been reported by multiple sources.

Stoops would be the last on my list, I would be all for giving Carroll another shot at the NFL and Rivera wouldn't bother me a bit.

If you believe Tedford he's off the market until his sons graduate. He says he promised them no job change until they're out of HS, which is 2 years. not that he'll leave then he said, just not before.

I think a great selection for the Cardinals would be Jim Tressel, the Ohio State coach. I doubt that he is interested in leaving his present job, however. But after this year, he has little left to prove in term of his coaching prowess.

Simply an excellent coach!

Bob Stoops hasn't had the same success at Oklahoma ever since Mike went to AZ. His defense which is supposed to be his specialty hasn't been as dominant since Mikey left.

If you remember Mike left right before the KSU Big 12 Championship and OKL got whopped by KSU and LSU.

Stoops might be pretty good. He turned OU around (albeit with John Blake's players) in his second season there and took them all they way to the NCAA Championship. A tough loss to LSU in his second BCS game and then USC's blowout against them in his third did indeed take away a lot of his luster. However he has at least as good or maybe better winning percentage at OU than Barry Switzer. 82-18 or something very close to it. The man knows how to win and he knows how to turn around a program. Keep in mind OU had been through a long drought by the time he got there. Stoops might be in for a change of scenery considering the up and down year he has had there this year.

Carroll is seemingly not cut out for the pro's. He seems to be much more of a college coach and his record in both college and the NFL bears this out.

Rivera? Is he ready? Has he ever been a head coach of either a college program or a pro team before? He might be a good one someday but i think he is too big of a risk for the Cards. The NFL is a tough league to do your training in as an HC.

True but OU's D is nothing to sneeze at this year. He is doing it largely with freshman, sophomores, and juniors this year. Another good thing about Stoops is he knows how to pick good DB's and how to coach 'em. OU has been a DB factory since he has been there.

Either one of these guys will still require a strong GM to help make decisions ... I kind of like the idea of Cam Cameron coming in here ..

I would prefer not to have a college coach as our next head coach. The chance of a college coach being successful as a NFL head coach is not very high. Many top OC or DC don't become successful head coaches. To be honest, with the list of likely candidates I would rather keep Green for another year.

Why? Andy Reid was a QB coach for Holmgren before and he got hired to be the coach at Philly. Mangini was a DB coach for the pats for a couple of years before he replace Crenell. Its a big risk but I'll take Rivera or Stoops over Green right now and Bidwill should hire a strong GM.

I was hoping Stoops name would surface. OU has been terrific to very good since he's been there after completely falling off the NCAA map for a decade or so. This year he lost his QB immediately before the season this year and still managed to put an excellent football team on the field showing good ability to react to adversity. His coaches throughout college, his brother, and Mark Mangino at Kansas, seem to be successful at turning around previously god awful teams. Stoops seems to know how to turn a loser into a winner as do his assistants. I'm all for it.

I think if there's one thing we can all agree on, it's that Bill Bidwill is not a person who should be trusted to make a good decision on a head coach candidate. Any coach he chooses should be deemed a disaster until proven otherwise.

Mike Bidwill will be making the initial contact and decision with Bill's blessing. I really believe that Mike is the one checking out the candidates and will be putting together the deal.

Yep, Mike will take the lead. Just like he did with Dennis Green. Thanks, az jam. Now I'm just oozing with confidence that the Cards will make the perfect hire!:sarcasm:

i have no worries. i will say this. with all this talent on this team, it not all green fault. whenever everyone agrees that the cardinals were suppose to give the seahawks run for their money to win the nfc west and green is the coach to lead them there, then you have to look at the players also. How many times did the offensive line miss there blocks or get pushed around. How many times did defensive players miss tackles. their is a lot of that going on. On top that nobody knows why this team is losing. on paper they should be on top of the division. nobody is performing up to their potential. that includes the front office, scouts, coaches, and especially the players. all in all it is up to the players to exicute the plays.

Wrong! Rivera might have played for Ryan, but as a coach he's a disciple of Andy Reid/Jim Johnson.

Rivera is an understudy of one of the best DCs in the NFL on perhaps the best run team in the NFL. That's why he's a hot candidate for a HC job.
