Big trade with patriots - Cooper for Chandler Jones

While your right we would'nt have won 13 without him either.

This definately changes things defensively & gives us a better chance.

Let's not forget Jones is pretty good on coverage as well though he's gonna get paid to tackle the QB

Unlike most New England writers/ sportscasters, Hannable generally knows what he is talking about. He, like Curran and a few others is good. I am a Pats fan and really like Chandler Jones, but it was the perfect time for the Pats to trade him. he will be UFA at the end of the season. The Pats have many important players reaching UFA at the end of next year, Hightower, Butler, Sheard, etc and Jones would have been the last one to get his money so he was probably gone. The drugged out of his mind at the police station during playoff week episode probably sealed the deal as far as BB was concerned. Just so you know, the Cards are getting a very good pass rusher. he tends to get his sacks in bunches. He is best as a 4-3 DE but you guys seem to like bigger OLB's who don't have to cover so that should work well. He will never be confused with Matt Shaughnessy against the run but he can really get after the passer which is what the cards need. Hopefully Cooper can bring something to the table and since the Pats got a 1st rounder stolen from them by Goodell and his minions, they were looking for picks. I am sure the pats would have preferred a higher 2nd rounder but with Cooper's possible potential hopefully it works out for both teams. Worst case for the cards, you are unable to sign Chandler Jones to a long term deal and he leaves after this coming year, But if that happens, you would probably get a 3rd rd compensatory pick, so all you would be out is Cooper and a drop from a 2nd to a 3rd a year later for one of the top 10 pass rushers in the league. Not a bad deal for the Cards.

Am I the only one that still wants Freeney re-signed? Can you imagine him and Jones, coming off opposite sides, on obvious passing downs...or heck, even the same side on a unbalanced blitz...You can't stop both of them.

I monitor your site off and on since I started following the Cards a couple years ago. I will try to post information if it can be of any value for you guys. Following the Pats for the past 40+ years and the cards for the past 3 years gave me some insight into what Chandler Jones could possibly bring to the table IMO.

Cooper needed a change of scenery. I think he can still become a solid talent once he gets to a new environment.

The Patriots have a decision to make even more quickly on Cooper. By May 3, they must exercise (or not) Cooper’s 2017 option. Because Cooper was picked in the top 10 of the 2013 draft, his option salary for 2017 matches the transition tender for offensive linemen in 2016. The magic number is a whopping $11.902 million.

So, we were going to have to make this decision or lose him. Instead we used him as trade bait for Jones. Awesome.

Pats fan here. I really like this deal for both teams. Jones was gone after this year and we have options behind him in the short term in Sheard and Ninkovich along with young guys the Pats drafted last year. It is hard to find a good DE but the Pats should be able to absorb the loss without losing too much this year. Cooper seems like an interesting player and though it seems he is likely just a 1 year rental it is a good signing with our all interior being so young. He is going to be the "old man" of the group at 26!. The 2nd round pick was the selling point of course and I will be interested to see what they do with that. Maybe go DE instantly to try to get the next guy or help out the team elsewhere? Overall I am happy with the trade.

Now the part you want to hear about.

First off Chandler Jones is a good football player and DE. However he is good and not great. He is not going to make the HOF but he has a very solid career in front of him. I like his ability to pass rush. He is a streaky player though and has a few very good games a year and a few games where he is invisible. Generally though he does get around the QB and causes pressure almost every game at the least. He is a better pass rusher than run defender but you would be hard pressed to find a pass rusher like him who plays the run as well. Most pass rushers are 10-15 lbs lighter so it is nice to not lose too much in run support considering he is a pass rusher first.

His incident with the weed is not a big deal in my mind. He keeps his nose clean generally and never came off as a head case to me. He loves the game and plays hard every game and is the kind of guy you want in your locker room though not really a defensive leader type. His biggest selling point is the amount of snaps he can play. He is better at 40 or so like most DEs but he can and often did go wire to wire for the Pats before this past year and was fairly good all game.

Considering your teams lack of rushers you are going to like him a lot but don't be shocked if he seems to be "meh" for a couple of short streaks this year. Also he does get injured a bit here and there but no major injuries yet so overall he tends to be out there for you but not a true iron man type player.

Sign Dwight....and wow. If you have both Dwight and Jones? It takes a huge amount of pressure off of Calais Campbell and frees him up to wreak more havoc IMO.
