QBs have traditionally had the biggest variants from slot money. Even though Jackson has said he’s avoiding an agent because of the slots, teams fear requests for more money or other odd compensations. It won’t deter many teams but it may mean awkward negotiations.

That could end in a holdout if he wanted same money given to the qbs in much higher slots.

Lamar Jackson is Exhibit A for how not to handle the predraft process. Agents exist for a reason, primarily for athletes to not do dumb crap and prepare for everything, which includes contract negotiations. I’m becoming more and more convinced that teams have moved him down several notches on their draft board.

Yeah, I don't read or watch much draft stuff away from the board, but even I've been hearing whispers of doubt about him, beyond on-field stuff. That's extremely worrying for someone with on-field question marks too.

I have no problem with players trying to save money, by not using an agent, and only using an attorney for contract language. But not in Jackson's case, as I don't think that either he or his mother is up to the task.

I thought the point of the slot was to avoid these kinds of problems?

Plenty for an agent to do even in the CBA agreement that ‘slots’ players salary depending on where they are picked. Our man Bradford was the last #1 QB under the old system and got $78m/6 years with his first ever contract. Newton was under the new CBA and got $22mil/4 years. Still, a 2% agent fee is a big chunk of money (it is a Wonderlic test question to calculate–hope LJ’s Mother can do the math).

Ironically, not having an agent is a red flag for some teams and may drop LJ down the draft board—he stands to lose more with the drop than he would have paid in agent fees if he had gone higher. Early mocks had him bunched with the other ‘top’ QBs and going in the top 10 picks, Latest mocks have him dropping to the bottom of the 1st—even into the 2nd. Teams prefer to deal with someone conversant with the all the inner rammifications of the contracts . . . not sure if LJ’s Mother has that working knowledge with contract law. An experienced agent is going to milk every advantage in the contract based on knowledge of how others signed in the past. That gets their client the best possible deal (and more $$$ for their fee).

It may not be about the agent’s fee but more about ‘hiding’ something from teams. An agent is going to have to be upfront if there is something regarding his client that teams need to know. That’s the only way for the agent to keep his rep. A Mother is going to be more protective.

Lots of web resources when the CBA changed in 2011 that deals with the new contract arrangements:

I thought so as well. The Joey Bosa situation was about guaranteed money correct, not contract slot amount with his hold out?
Right. Bosa was holding out for the signing bonus which is probably what LJ's mom is thinking. But, like @GimmedaBall mentioned this is likely going to work against him when the actual negotiating starts.

This is an interesting read. A bit technical, but the 25% rule is interesting. https://frontofficenfl.com/2017/03/27/nfl-rookie-contracts-explained/

Edit to clarify the Bosa holdout. The Chargers wanted to defer some of the signing bonus payment. Take that away and the slot system does work the vast majority of the time.

If he slides, all the better. Draft Ridley with the 15 and trade back into the end of the round and grab Jackson.

That would be my ideal draft scenario.

Vile and ignorant comment.

LJ's Mother was his rock after he lost his Father when he was 8 years old. It is no wonder that he trusts her first and foremost. She kept her sons first in everything.

I still think he needs an agent to navigate the process---but thrashing his Mother is totally uncalled for.

K9 was making a joke about the vile and ignorant comment a Miami Dolphin's exec made during the pre-draft process a few years back, not making t he comment himself.

Agents are a necessary evil in pro sports as possible injuries are to the athlete... he will eventually find himself getting one

It wasn't funny during pre-draft interviews when Jeff Ireland asked Dez Bryant if his Mother was a prostitute. It didn't become 'funny' after 8 years and certainly should not be repeated as a 'joke' comment.

K9 should speak for himself as to how he meant the comment since he was the one who posted it.

It clearly wasn't funny back then; I thought the reference was witty and spot on. To each their own.

Even though K9 is a know it all, I wholly believe he was making a joke, one not pointed at LJs mother, but the process/the league/the debacle in general.

Why? He is the consensus #1 WR in the draft at arguably our weakest position.
He is a smaller WR who is not as dynamic as I would like when I watch him. I think he is being elevated by being the best in a bad class. Also, I don't think we are set at QB which means I would wait to use precious assets on players that are dependent on that position.

I'm still convinced Jackson is a total bust and totally wasted pick by some team, johnny Manziel minus the good time fun stuff. Sure we will review this comment in the near future.

With more and more coming out about Jackson’s inability on a whiteboard, teams are getting even more concerned.
