Report of Davis as DC

Just wanted to check in here, with KTAR reporting linebackers coach Bill Davis will be the Cards’ new defensive coordinator. There is nothing official and as I indicated yesterday, I don’t expect anything official before Tuesday morning (the Cards’ offices are closed Monday for the holiday). I wouldn’t be surprised either if the team wanted to announce all its coaching switches at once as well, so there are a lot of moving parts.

I would not judge Davis based on what happened in SF. If anything, because this guy was on his current staff, there's even LESS of a chance that Whiz is wrong about this guy.

Why cant you judge him based on the last time he was a DC. A person is judged on their body of work until they can prove otherwise. But thats not to say that a zebra cant change their stripes, becuase they can and they have.

How does Davis being on the staff already make it less of a chance that he could be wrong about him? Wiz knows him as a LB coach not as a DC. Wiz knows more about his character and work ethic yes but he doesnt know any more about his ability to be a DC compared to someone else that isnt on the staff.

Again, I wouldn't read a lot into Davis's time as DC in S.F. Nolan was the DC in Baltimore when he took the head job in S.F. Those crappy defenses were on Nolan, IMO. I don't think Davis had a lot of creative control there.

Well then lets hope none of those bad influences follows him, becuase those D's were beyond horrible.

Zebras can't change their stripes, of that I'm certain.

Coaches improving is not quite as certain, but not inconceivable. ;)

Putting resume against resume I would have went with Pendy who clearly has the better resume.

Not by much imo. The Cards finished bottom 10 in points allowed 4 years in a row with Pendy as DC. In 2006 his D was almost as bad as SF's finishing 29th in both scoring and yardage.

The secondary was consistently pathetic. I thought it might have been Green because Denny had a rep for that, but then the same things happened this year.

I'm not saying that Davis is any world beater but I am real happy a change is being made.

The players on that defense were also pretty horrible as well. SF was in the middle of a salary cap purge.

Derek Smith and Shawntae Spencer were the leading tacklers in 2005. Brandon Moore and Keith Lewis in 2006.

Only spencer is still on the team and he hardly played this year.

Davis' 49er's defense ranked near the bottom of the league with crap for personnel.
Pendergast's Cardinals defense ranked near the bottom of the league, with half-decent personnel.

Hhhmm.

Davis has done very well in coaching LBing corps in several different settings. Atlanta; Keith Brooking was a Pro Bowl LB all three seasons Davis was there; and Carolina were especially good jobs. Even in SF Davis coached Brandon Moore to an outstanding year.

The LB's are the heart of the 3-4 defense.

If Davis is the pick for DC, it's a solid selection.

Devils advocate(even though I am slowly softening on Davis as seen in other threads).

Brooking was already a good LB. He wasnt the 12th pick in the draft for nothing. Was well on his way until he was put on IR the year before Davis went there.

In Carolina he was just the OLB coach where he was working with an already great and previous years pro bowler in Kevin Greene.

Moore had career bests under Davis but they were not outstanding.
