Blaine Gabbert: Officially handed the keys to the car (dinals)

Being a hard worker and knowing the playbook doesn't guarantee you a single thing, especially if you aren't very good. There's no such thing as 'deserve' in the NFL.

Apparently there is such a thing as hierarchy and politics that need to be played. How else do you explain the so-called "injury" to Stanton (who played the entire game after getting "injured.")

Indifferent on this but will say he is playing better than Stanton and should start the next game. Still bothers me that he seems to make a bad mistake that cost games. Hopefully that can be corrected.

He is not the QBOTF though.

It's no surprise Arians went with Stanton at the time, and he should have. Stanton had been the #2 all year, knows the offense, and had shown he was a game manager that could win/not lose games as the backup.

With Gabbert you're getting a more talented QB without question but you're also going to get plays like the fumble that CC ran in for a score.

Seen similar plays and holding on too long... So it get a big Meh from me.. Hell Ive seen many PG QBs do it..

im still in a "need to see more" mode with Gabbert

its obvious the offense has been tweaked for him -- ive seen more throws to TEs in the last two weeks than the previous 9 combined (it seems). Defenses will now catch up to take that away --

the other stat was that when blitzed, Gabbert was not very good. New QBs all seem to get the same treatment from defenses: stop the run, play zone behind it and force new QB to make the right decision. Wait for the ints to come.

Got to cut down on interceptions. He already has 3 and was lucky that he didn't get more.

He appeared to be out of sync with receivers (timing) at times but that will come with reps. Stanton was just making a ton of piss poor throws and his touch was awful at times. I am not calling BG the future but at least there is some unknown to him over Stanton to hope for in the immediate future.

The only negative I see with BG is that he seemed to have a silent count in his head when he thought the Oline would be crumbling, and panicked. The Oline was still holding the line and he had atleast a few more seconds to go through his progressions, but pulled the ball down and ran. I like how he is mobile but give it a sec or 2 more then run.

While both Palmer and Stanton could make that “throw”, they wouldn’t have because they would’ve been on their back picking bits of Calais Campbell out of their teeth... CC had Gabbert lined up, in his cross-hairs and was inches from getting him in is grasp. But Gabbert used his superior athleticism to avoid Campbell, move around and up in the pocket and make the throw...

Yeah, he did well and ran from the pocket at the right time, but there were several times he could have stayed a few more seconds. I understand why he didn't as most of the time, the line collapses on him pretty quickly.

What ticks me off is that we have all watched Stanton plod his way through mediocrity for years. It's hard to believe that a teams coaching staff would not recognize Gabberts ability sometime over the last 6 months and come to the conclusion he was better than Stanton. The same could be said for Ricky Seals-Jones.
Don't coaches see this and talk about it in staff meetings? Or is it once the preseason is over the roster is set unless there is an injury?

This board has been clamoring for Gabbert just by what we saw in preseason. How can an experienced staff not see it?

All 3 of our QB's can make that throw & all have. That one was a little short btw. Jaron had to hold up & wait for it.

He is not the QBOTF though.

I like the idea of playing Gabbert and the possibility of him being the starter in 2018, however... in the back of my mind, I can't help but think that BA is starting to minimize the Cardinals need at QB for the upcoming draft.

I do not think SK/BA are above trying to manipulate the draft (to whatever extent they can) so they can draft QBOTF.

My point is you can't use 2 games to determine who is the better QB by QB rating.

I hope Gabbert can progress, he shows talent, more talent than Stanton ever had, so hopefully this win, gives him some "moyo" - "swagger" and maybe somehow ... yeah ... at the end 7-9 sounds right, but at least for now, some dreams are there ... we can still somehow talk playoffs ... even if the D is bad coached on every second sunday, ST is terrible coached and we have a long Injury list ...

Hindsight is 20-20.

Stanton and Gabbert have different sets of strengths & weaknesses (i.e. either could succeed/both could fail). Add to this varying rates of development and improvement.

Coming into this season, Stanton (for better or for worse) was a known entity. Gabbert wasn't. When you're an old-school coach, you go with what you know and refrain from rolling the dice on a QB who "might" turn out to be OK.

Fate (in the form of injuries) and not player-evaluation genius determined that Gabbert would get his shot. Fortunately, so far it's worked out well.

All of which is to say that choosing the right QB is as much art as science, with a whole container of luck thrown in. SK played the percentages when he kept Gabbert as his #3, and the odds finaly worked in our favor.

Arians stated that the team hadn't worked on roll out drills in a long time. It looked like it on Sunday. I'd like to see Gabbert run harder too. He seemed to take off a bit tentatively. Josh McCown did the same as a Cardinal back in the day.

What the heck do I know, but I suspect that our best plan for Gabbert might be to smooth the rough edges and not try to do anything too radical to change his style of play.

What I liked was his quick release, accuracy, poise and mobility. What I hope he'll try to improve is ball protection and consistency.

When he does decide to run he needs to protect the ball better. Running with it in one hand is just asking for trouble.

What I would also like to see him improve on is keeping his head up field when scrambling. He seems locked into running once he decides to leave the pocket far too often.
