Zack Lowe write-up on Bledsoe and the contract

Good write-up by Lowe on the contract, the impact on the Suns, the League, and what to expect from Bledsoe.

Bledsoe is a beast in the open court, but he has learned the nuances of tricking defenses, anticipating rotations, and dribbling in ways that open up passing angles and cutting lanes for teammates. He knows options 1, 2, and 3, and he’s smart enough to skip option 1 when he sees the defense leaning to it early. He should continue to get better with more experience, and if he improves just another notch as a long-range shooter, he’s going to be a killer.

The defense is as advertised. He’s one of my Mirror Guys, defenders who mimic the moves of their marks so precisely, and so immediately, they appear to be moving in concert with them — both on and off the ball. Even strong 2-guards struggle to post him up or dislodge him on drives, and when he falls a step behind trailing the pick-and-roll, he’s fast enough to pop right back into your line of sight with one of his giant arms reaching to swat at your shot.

He’s not 100 percent proven yet. There is risk here for Phoenix, beyond the injuries. The Suns scored at a bottom-five rate when Bledsoe ran things without Dragic, per NBA.com, and he’s never been a full-time solo starting point guard. But that’s a 43-game sample size on a team that didn’t bring a ton of perimeter threats coming off the bench to help Bledsoe create offense. He is still a bit turnover-prone, especially in transition, though they are less often the product of reckless careening than they used to be

To be fair, though, nobody thought we'd even be this close at this point. We're probably a good 2 years ahead of schedule in the rebuild.

That's the next big goal now. Good young core? Check. Strong backcourt? Check. Winning culture? Next. The FAs will come.

I even think winning culture is a check.

We are now at the "final piece" stage. We are one key player away from contention. Two way star player on the front line. Preferably a pf or C.

I don't think so. We did well last year, but still didn't make the playoffs and most of our roster is awfully young.

Yep. Bledsoe is really our two guard. He can defend 2's. I am not sure of any shooting guard in the league he cannot defend. His arms are so long and he is so strong he even gives some sf's fits.

Well, KD is not really a shooting guard, and there is nobody in the league that can really guard KD.

I think Dragic does a good job defending SGs, and Bledsoe does a phenomenal job defending quick PGs that Dragic can't handle. They both do struggle a bit against taller players. I remember the nets (Williams and Livingston) destroying Bledsoe and Dragic in the low post in one game last year.

I think my main concern defensively is in the post- Dragic/ Bledsoe/ Tucker trio is fine, but it's 4s and 5s that we need help with.

Agreed. To have a winning culture, you gotta at least get to the playoffs for a couple years, or at least make a splash the first time you get there (like the Warriors did two years ago). Until we accomplish one of those goals, we've yet to watblaish that.

Humiliating? All media reports were that the Suns weren't at fault for a lack of negotiations.

The Suns received no bad publicity in any article or media report about this? Really? I heard and read all kinds of stuff from the JJ comparison to the Suns not coming to the table or cutting off talks. I didn't say any of them had merit mind you. I was on the Suns side of this per my previous posts.

Only that any negative publicity under Sarver adds to his already poor reputation around the league justified or not. I personally think the Suns could have avoided all this back and forth by making this offer earlier but we will never know. Having said that I am with the Suns and not offering him a max contract.

Agreed. The Suns need to win consistently an be in the playoffs consistently to say we have a winning culture.

I wonder if signing Bledsoe is going to change the Vegas odds on Phoenix winning the '15 NBA championship. Now they have us way down the list - 19th, 23rd and 25th in ascending order of offered odds - three different odds makers, naturally. The offered odds were 75:1, 85:1 and 100:1. Thats bad for a team that finished with the 13th best record last year. I wouldn't think losing Frye would cause that much of a drop so I figure some of it reflected an unoptimistic view of our resinging Eric.

I might place a bet on them just for entertainment value, but I wouldn't consider it a value bet at anything below 100:1, and probably not even then.

I will take some liberty here, but the Suns have two star type players in Dragic and Bledsoe and like JCSunsfan said, looking for a third on the frontline.

Bledsoes deal at first seemed high but after reading a bit about a potential league-wide salary cap increase his deal seems right in the ballpark of where it should be. If he stays healthy and continues to improve we'll be glad to have that extra year on his contract. His long contract gives our young team plenty of time to fulfill its potential as well.

As far as some people saying "This deal could have been done sooner"...negotiations are a tricky thing. Many times it has to come to crunch time to know how serious the other party is and to see who "blinks first". Since both sides were so far apart and both felt they were justified in their thinking the delay seemed unavoidable. This was a very big deal for both sides and there should be no rush.

This signing means a couple of things.

We won't have to worry about our backcourt until the next decade.
Injuries won't have nearly the impact they have in the past, at the position.
And, we can play small ball when needed, better than any team in the league.

The team also is deep with reserve caliber talent on the baseline. What we really need is a star forward. Getting a big scorer/rebounder like Kevin Love would have made us instant contenders, but he wanted to slide in nut to butt with LeBron. Can't blame him after having to carry Minnesota on his back for six years.

Package the Morris Brothers, Green, Goodwin, and two draft picks and trade for Blake Griffin. Or whatever it takes.

Love the backcourt. Then again, rarely has the Suns backcourt ever been an issue. Some depth is being put together which is nice. These Suns will be fun to watch for that portion of the fanbase.

Suns still need more of the obvious up front to truly contend. Nothing new there.

If we trade Green (which I hope we don't) we should not include Goodwin. He can take over when Green leaves. Kid is barely 20. We must have patience for once because the bench does not need to be scrubs/token players only. We can have young talent there.

I'm not sure if there is a better backcourt in the league. Curry and Thompson come closest. Then, if you count the three guard rotation including IT2, I have no doubt it's the best 3 guard rotation.

Joe Johnson.

... I sat here staring at my screen for a good couple minutes trying to figure out the proper response to that.

How on earth did you settle on Joe Johnson? Not only is the sample size pretty small, but its not very good either. He averaged 16 points on 15 shots per game against us.

LeBron giving a shout out to his boy Bledsoe and the homie Rich Paul

Now that things have worked out just fine, LeBron took to Instagram to congratulate both Bledsoe and Paul, while taking a shot at the critics at the same time.

“Congrats to my brother @ebled2!! Family stand for each other through the good and bad! I guess we still don’t know what we doing yet huh Rich!?! #StriveForGreatness #Klutch #RWTW”

I'm really sad to be that happy not to have the best player of the Planet at my prefered team. Strange...

Eric has a lot to prove from now on.

I hope the Cav's suck this year. I doubt Lebron leaves but it seems like their whole roster can leave at seasons end with the exception of Kyrie. The only way I think Lebron leaves is if they miss the playoffs, which would be next to impossible in the east with their talent but Love may leave if it's a circus and things don't go smoothly. Seriously take a look at their contracts and it's similar to Miami this offseason in that almost all of their players can leave after the 2014/15 season, Lebron and Love included. I don't see us having a shot at Lebron but if Love decides to listen to other teams we should stand as much of a chance as anyone else.

So. LeBron is taking credit (at least partial) for this contract. You get the impression that LeBron is an owner of Klutch. The use of "we" in that tweet is disturbing. Would it not be a major conflict of interest for a player to be involves in contract negotiations for other players with other teams?

LeBron is going to become a problem for Adam Silver.

And I thought Lebron was running the NBA.
