Oh great, another wasted draft pick. It figures. What kind of an idiot GM drafts someone only to lose him to some foreign team? It's time for McDonough to go. First, he and Jeff ruin our chance to draft high and then they waste the picks we did get. Heads should roll over this one.

It was clear we didn't want him over here. We forced him to sign over there. He is the epitome of a stash pick.

A) When we drafted him, he was in NY, and on ESPN said he wanted to come this year.
B) When we held the press conferences for our picks, he wasn't there. I bet he wanted to be.
C) When we announced the Summer League roster, he wasn't on it. But Alec Brown was.

It's clear we decided for it to be this way. But considering we have all these picks and young guys, it might be best for him. Two Picks last year, three this year, and I think two or three next year.

That said it wouldn't of hurt to put him in the Summer league and see what he has. But 2016 might be a good spot. He should be sufficiently ready to come over and we should have sifted through enough of our 2013-2015 draft picks to find him a spot.

Chuckle

Still there is a chance the Suns may never see him again. Also he will be 24 about then. Too bad the Suns could have not traded #27 for a future first rounder. Hopefully this all works out for the best. The Suns planned for stashing a player overseas.

Life can be so cold. :)

But what you say is correct. I hope it works out.

He apparently is amazing in Europe. I'd have liked to see him on roster this year but I can understand why they prefer to keep him in Europe since we have so many guards.

Low risk, high reward.

Perfect use of the 27th pick. He develops, and we have room to develop other young players. More options down the road. I love rooting for a team that stockpiles assets.

Can you imagine adding a seasoned veteran in 2016 seemingly from out of nowhere? I hope it works out!

Although these players were not stashed, there is the overseas find of second round pick Goran Dragic (obtained from Spurs) and the Suns drafted and sold the rights to second round pick Marcin Gortat. Also the Suns traded a protected future first round draft pick to the Spurs for late first round draft pick Leandro Barbosa. The Suns and Spurs have had a connection.

I'm afraid to look who the Spurs drafted with that pick.

I probably shouldn't have included Barbosa as overseas unless we count the Panama Canal.

These U.S. Amercians need more maps. :)

That never gets old. Seriously. On my death bed I'm probably going to ask to see it just one more time.

The Spurs stashed Ginobili for 3 years I think. Its a great way to build a team with lower picks.

This is all fine but I do wish the D-League would fully develop into a proper minor league. I'd much rather have a guy like Bogdanovic playing for 2 years on the Suns D-League affiliate where they can control the type of system he's playing in, what sort of coaching he's getting, and potentially call him up for stints when other guys are injured or whatever.

As long as d-league assignees have to occupy NBA roster spots, that is not going to happen.

Agreed/understood. I don't think thats a rule thats long for this world, it doesn't really make sense. Guys on the Reno Aces don't count towards the D'backs roster.

Once each NBA team has its own, controlled, D-League affiliate, I think we'll start to see some major changes on that front.

Well there's still the money issue. They can play for a revenue generating club in Europe (or elsewhere) or they can play for a bare bones organization here. If the NBA can figure out a way to combine the major NCAA teams with the Development League, it could work but until then these guys are just not going to be financially motivated to join the NBDL IMO.

I guess I was assuming if the NBA has enough cash to subsidize the WNBA, it could do the same for the D-League. :p

You're right though, foreign teams will likely always be able to offer more than a D-League team. However, some guys might be motivated by the idea of getting into the NBA sooner and choose to still come to the D-League.
