I don't know if you guys talked about this but I just wanted to mention it in case no one had. I was listening to MNF on radio & Boomer seems to still have an axe to grind against the Cardinals. He softened his stance a little using the "some organizations" don't know "How to win" don't "keep their good players" (i.e.: Simeon Rice, Michael Pittman & Thomas Jones). I just wanted to ask what's his problem? I saw him play in '96 he had a couple a good games. (Washington - here) And he had a couple of terrible games (Dallas - here) & got yanked. You;d think after 6 years he could get over it... Thoughts? Did I miss something?

he got benched, I think for Graham? He had a huge 500+ yard passing game(with 4 or 5 picks though) and apparently he felt it was ridiculous to be benched so soon after that game. So he came out and said so and since he's Boomer, people listened and it got national press, Boomer says the Cards are dumb for benching him.

It got blown out of proportion and I don't think Boomer and Tobin ever forgot it. After the year he was cut, we named Graham the starter, Case the backup, and drafted some guy from ASU in the 2nd round.

It's interesting, in 97 he went to the Bengals to back up Blake, and eventually wound up starting. Blake had a bad year, playing hurt, lost his job after a concussion in a game where Boomer played well. Boomer finished up with a great year but insisted Blake was the starter, should stay the starter, and then retired. They signed O'Donnell(who played well) and went 3-13 with him.

Another Blake note, Bulger set an NFL record for most passing yards in the first 5 games of an NFL career last year, the guy who held the record before.... Jeff Blake, with 1410 yards in his first 5 games on 1994 with Cincy!

The NFL is like Kevin Bacon they're all interconnected (-:

I could be wrong, but I thought the big deal was that they benched Esiason, and he thought it was because if he reached a certain amount of passing yards for the season, he got a bonus.

So when he got close, they benched him, and he thought it was because they were trying to screw him out of the money.

That is what I heard - is there any truth in that story?

Yeah, I heard that too. The comment I found most ignorant was when Marv Alberts made a comment on T. Jones not 'finding himself' in AZ. Boomer's response:

"...most players can't find themselves in Arizona. Uh, unless they're 37 or 38."

Nice save, dumbazz. Before you trash a team, you better make sure the comment doesn't apply to you.

yeah that's what I heard too. I actually thought he should have stayed our starting QB. I'm remember reading that he was really close to his incentives and people thought that he would be benched because of it and lo and behold he was, he would have reached the next game I think. I thought it was kind of fishy too....

I forgot about that part of the equation but you're right there was some incentive he was close to although I don't recall what it was.

Basically at the time the Cards thought Graham might be a diamond in the rough, they knew Boomer was close to retirement, so it made some sense. But I wouldn't put it past us to bench a guy to save money.

Graham was an interesting guy in HS he was rated the #1 Qb prospect in the country, I think he went to Notre Dame first and then Ohio State(I forget). Strong arm and big but unpolished, at the time we thought we had a steal, he played well that year but then bombed out as the starter in 97 and lost his job permanently.

Ok!

Before reading anything. Let me guess.

Who is one of the most overrated QB's of all time, and now makes a living talking out of his @ss.

Was I right?

Boomer was cool as a QB and it is really really hard having watched that whole thing transpire live to not agree with his assessment.

I don't know who's idea it was but he lit it up for about 3 weeks and was getting dangerously close to that incentive... I just don't believe that anyone figured he could hit it in so short a time.

One possiblity that has been mentioned was that he was changing plays to get more passes in. No one is going to ever admit the truth one way or another just their viewpoints.

Boomer was a good QB who likes to shoot his mouth off a lot.

Boomer is a hostile and negative commentator. That is why he lost his Monday night job. All he does is criticize and second guess.
