I don't think it's necessarily a bad choice by Bowles. The makings of a good 3-4 defense are already in place so he won't have to make the transition like he would in Atlanta.

He has a good offensive mind, in Gailey, coming aboard to run that side of the ball. If Gailey can somehow get something out of Geno Smith, they can challenge pretty quickly.

Plus, Bowles had to watch the last 3 games with Lindley running the offense. Watching Geno Smith in comparison may have Bowles thinking he's moving up to Johnny Unitas.

Jets are so stupid. They hire a great defensive coach after already have a great defensive coach.

I think that the firing of Ryan was more about building a team unit and comprehensive front office than it was about Ryan's underperformance. Ryan never lost the clubhouse or had his team quit on him. I think that Ryan's out because his performance was no longer matching his mouth and because he couldn't communicate with John Idzik, who was also fired.

Can we at least hire guy who can:

Cover TE's

Not leave receivers wide open

Put constant pressure on the QB

Not let QB's like Wilson run free all over the place

Some of those things are about talent, but it's difficult to do all those things at the same time. Particularly the last two. Unless you have an innovative defensive philosophy that allows you to put 13 players on the field legally.

This was an extremely poor choice by Bowles. They are at best the third best team in that division without a lot of young talent on that team.

I doubt he makes it to year 3.

I know it probably feels that way, but particularly on offense they have some intriguing young pieces:

RB Chris Ivory, 26
WR Percy Harvin, 26
WE Eric Decker, 27
TE Jace Amaro, 22

Their offensive line is more of a problem, with their two best starters in Ferguson and Mangold both over 30.

The #Jets D-Line may be getting stronger. Coach Todd Bowles is expected to hire #Dolphins DL coach Kacy Rodgers as defensive coordinator.

He’ll be on the staff, but not as DC RT @PReilly_BSN: @RapSheet I thought it was already reported as Mike Caldwell as Dc?

The Jets may have over achieved to reach 4-12 last season. They have a few studs surrounded by a whole bunch of duds.

FWIW, Geno Smith was the only quarterback in the league to post a perfect passer rating last year (final game).

Doesn't count 'cause it was against the Dolphins.

Just announced:

Mark Dalton ‏@CardsMarkD
Congrats @BruceArians: named NFL Coach of the Year by prestigious Maxwell Football Club in Philadelphia.

I just find it hard to believe that Belechick doesn't get it every year. Seriously. Followed by Carroll, McCarthy, Pagano.

No Pressure, Though

Now that is typical of NY tabs. Like Chris said, if he makes it 3 years, then I say he should be coach of the century. Woody Johnson makes Dan Snyder look like a charter member of the NFL branch of Mensa. Sports talk radio must be going nutz in NY/NJ.

Johnson must have given Bowles the key to the vault. Best of luck Todd.

They need to hit it big in FA and draft for future. Forget Harvin, he is poison (26 and on his 3rd team). OL is a wreck. They draft 6th. Looks like Amari Cooper will be choice or trade down with Cooper slot and fill that O Line. The draft board is full of O line bodies. It could be a tough road for Bowles to put together a staff on that O side.

Agree with this except for Harvin, good physical skills but he doesn't have his head screwed on right. He will probably end up being poison or he will be selectively cut from the roster. He also has a lengthy history of injuries.

I think to be fair that Belicheck saves his best stuff for the playoffs, and CoY is a regular-season award. And properly or not, I think that Belicheck's genius is discounted for having Tom Brady.

I'll stand by the word "intriguing."

The Jets also have nearly $50M in salary cap space with 52 players on the roster and only David Harris and Kyle Wilson as important-ish pending free agents.

Solid defensive front with Wilkerson and Richardson. Versatile safety in Pryor. So I think Bowles has some defensive pieces to work with. In terms of the offense, Chan Gailey is an experienced guy and the offense has some pieces. The issues with the Jets are with the owner more than the actual team.

With all of that space I wonder if Bowles goes after either Dan Williams or Cro in Free Agency?

Dan Williams would be a nice piece of the puzzle sandwiched between Richardson and Wilkerson.

Wonder if Cro would be willing to return to the Jets?

Wouldn't shock me to see Cromarte end up there.

That would be a pretty stunning misspending of resources if they brought in Williams. The last two seasons the Jets have deployed UDFA Damon Harrison at nose tackle. The 6'4", 350 lbs product of William Penn(WTF?) has started the last 32 games for a really good Jets run defense.

I wonder if the Browns sign Williams.

I think Cro understands that this is a business, and he'll go wherever he gets paid the most. I also think he L-O-V-E-D playing in New York.

I thought that Harrison was a FA but just saw he was a RFA. So yeah they will most likely bring him back on a tender offer.

Agreed. It's great Bowles got an HC gig, but the Jets are probably the worst situation to go to. I really thought ATL would have been a great fit since most of the pieces are in place.

I hope it works out for him and he's not the rebound/transition coach.

And somewhere Ray Horton is curled up wondering, "why not me??"

Good luck Todd Bowles. I can still root for him more than most because my wife is a Jets fan so I watch a good number of their games.

I 'm sure BA has another bullet in the gun and will find another great DC.
