Branch ran with the scout team for the most part in his first practice, but he impressed Holmgren enough to make the coach’s formerly steely resolve not to play his newest offensive asset against the Cardinals this Sunday soften a bit. “I haven’t made a decision - we’ll go right down to the wire on that one,” Holmgren said. “In talking to Deion yesterday, in situations like this, typically the player doesn’t come in and suit up and play right away. A player usually isn’t ready to do that. He’s usually not in football shape because he wasn’t in training camp, and it’s unfair to the player.

“This young man is a little different cat now, he’s in great shape, but he still hasn’t played any football for a while, but we’ll see and we’ll make that decision late in the week … He’s a quick study, and he’s a bright guy and he works hard at it off the field, but there’s a lot to do, but you could certainly put in a little package where he is on the field. I’ve got to see him practice a couple days first here.”

Seahawks | Trying to get Branch involved
Thu, 14 Sep 2006 10:54:15 -0700

Updating previous reports, Associated Press reports Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Holmgren hasn't made a decision yet on whether WR Deion Branch will play during Week 2. Branch was on the field with the team Wednesday, Sept. 13, and said he still has a lot to learn with the squad. He ran mostly with the team's scout team during workouts. "Everything's all new," Branch noted. Holmgren said he feels Branch is going to be a great fit in their offense. He may come up with some starter packet type plays which Branch can focus on to be involved sooner rather than later.

Seahawks | May start using four-receiver sets
Thu, 14 Sep 2006 10:53:32 -0700

Associated Press reports Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Holmgren is considering featuring some formations with four wide receivers in order to take advantage of having receivers Deion Branch, Darrell Jackson, Nate Burleson and Bobby Engram on roster. The team now has five wideouts with starting experience in the NFL. While Holmgren noted they have not done much with four receiver sets in the past, it now intrigues him because it would allow the team to have all four receivers on the field at the same time.

Should I start him on my fantasy team...I hope he sucks of course.. but just in case they throw in a play or tow for him... good chance he gets me some points

I believe he will play... and perhaps we can get couple of drops from him since he is not in football shape, or an int due to route/timing issues with QB :)

Considering that Branch only had 5 TD's all of last season, I'd say the risk/reward factor doesn't favor playing him against the Cardinals.

Either way, Pendergast will have to account for Branch in his game prep; thereby diverting time and energy - all the more reason for Holmgren to play coy about whether or not Deon will suit up.

Bah...He's not THAT good that Pendy is losing sleep over him. It's not like he's at the level of our guys, Steve Smith, Marvin Harrison, TO or Chad Johnson. He's a very good WR, not a great one, IMO.

Guy, he is 5'9 and NEVER topped 1000 yards or 5 TDs in a pass happy offense. He's a decent player, but he's not worth worrying anymore than Burleson and darn sure not worth 6+ mil a year.
