Gil Brandt seems to think that Palmer could be the next guy to throw for 5000 yards. Thoughts?

Easily, especially if you count INT return yardage :D.

Actually, there is a good chance because I think Ellington is going to be used extensively in the passing game rather than just handing him the ball.

If Stafford can do it, so can Palmer. I realize Stafford has Calvin, but overall, we have more pass catchers plus a coach who's in love with the deep ball.

I wouldn't bet on it, but Brandt's assertion isn't completely insane.

It's not completely out of the realm of possibility... This isn't like suggesting Derek Anderson could throw for 5,000 yards!

I think the offense has as good of a shot as any other team in the NFL, to allow Palmer to hit 5,000.
And as is always the case, it will mostly depend on health, with a lesser but still critical dependency upon the run game. If we lose Fitz, Floyd, one of the Brown's, Carlson, and/or Ellington, fuggetaboutit...
And, if we can't establish some type of credible run threat, fuggetaboutit...

But this O-line has the chance to be the best this franchise has seen in a very, very long time. Palmer will most likely have enough time to read and make the most appropriate throws.
It could be an amazing year for the offense...

I don't think it's insane at all. With Fitz, Floyd, 2 Brown's, Ellington & our TE committee, it's a very real possibility. It depends on how our D holds up. If we're playing from behind, it's even more likely.

That's where I was going with it.

I do think the passing game will be awesome.

Well he only needs to average about 60 more passing yards per game, so no, it's not out of the realm of possibility. That's one deep pass per game more.

Just don't force the ball into Fitz anymore and he can accomplish it. I honestly think half of the INTs he had last year was from trying to force it into Fitz.

Actually I was wrong, he only needs 45.375 more passing yards per game.

with the weapons this team has on offense and my suspicion that we'll be in shootouts or playing catchup during some games this year, I could see this as a possibility.

I don't know how many turnovers he ends up with on the season, but speaking strictly from a FF perspective, he could be a bonanza late round steal for anyone who doesn't take one of the top QBs early.

Yeah, especially multi QB starting leagues. There's only 6 teams, but in one of my leagues with 3 Starting QB's I got... Manning, Brees, Stafford...and my two backups...Brady and Palmer.

I'd put a lot more stock in what Gil Brandt had to say, if he wasn't going the way of Al Davis. It's actually a little sad to listen to him on Sirius.

he most certainly could do it and still end up with an 8-8 record

I think it depends on Ellington and a well balanced run game, which can give Palmer time in the pocket as well as utilizing the play action. Palmer may have the best receivers in the League right now, and the line looks way better so 5 could happen.

With the schedule the Cards have I cannot imagine Palmer getting that number.

I don't think there is any chance at all that he gets 5k. None.
