When I first started watching this show I never really "pulled" for any character. In these past two episodes I have begun to root for Hank and Marie like I root for the Cardinals every Sunday. This show is simply the best that I have ever seen.

On a related note in case anyone missed this 14 years ago Aaron Paul was a contestant on the Price is Right, made it to the Showcase Showdown and overbid by $132. Crazy stuff. The link to the video is at the bottom of the story.

Yep - earlier in this thread.

There is also a cereal commercial with Aaron Paul ...

Gotta have my Pops, bitch !! :D

I don't see anything big Marie did and I'm still rooting for Walt. I hate Hank can't side with him on anything.

I now think Marie and Hank flip to the darkside.

Hank can't win by turning Walt in and Marie just wants to steal the kid, but can't get it if Skyler goes to jail ?????

I thought it was a solid episode.

*** Spoilers of course ***

We had the reemergence of Todd and his uncle. Strong tension between the sisters. Jesse in for questioning. That cannot end well. The overall tension is building nicely.

Awesome theory online now (not mine)...

In Breaking Bad, Walt has a habit of taking on some little traits of the people he has killed.

When Walt killed Crazy 8, he started cutting off the crusts of his sandwiches - just as Crazy 8 had done.

Gus drives a Volvo. After Walt kills Gus, at the beginning of Season 5 (at the Denny's), Walt is driving a Volvo (w/ NH plates).

When Mike and Walt meet at a bar in an earlier season, Walt orders his drink neat while Mike has his on the rocks. After Mike is killed, and Hank offers Walt a drink in his office - he asks for it on the rocks.

At that same scene at Denny's, Walt arranges his bacon into his new age. Someone else used to do that. On top of that, he's using Skyler's maiden name on his fake ID.

Based on his history of picking up traits from his victims - I believe Walt is going to murder Skyler before the series is over, and it probably had already happened before he showed up at the Denny's in the Season 5 cold open.

Is the giant gun in the back of Walt's car the same one from Scarface? Remember that he and Jr. were just watching that movie and Walt loved it because "everyone dies".

Foreshadowing?

I am pretty sure his new goal is to kill Lydia. Can't think of another reason for the cold opens for Season 5 and 5.2.

Also, Skyler needs to die. Like right now. Hopefully in a very painful and agonizing way, because that is how I feel every time she is on the screen.

Damnit. This makes so much sense. Too much, actually. Wish I didn't read it.

yeah...I'm staying away from any theories on line or anywhere else. I've gotten to the point with the show that I've willingly given up trying to figure out how it's going to end. I just want to sit back and let it all unfold.

This was how we were introduced to the White family. Skyler arranging the veggie bacon in Walt's age.

I thought the episode was substantial.

- Returned Walt to hero status, at least within the ethos of this universe. With the cancer back, he's rediscovered his roots: Wanting to provide for his family.

- Allowed Skyler to see Walt's motivation. He's now humanized and to be pitied in her eyes, because she and the kids were his motivation. She was rightly caught off guard by Walt's sacrificial offer.

- It established which side Skyler was one. She was redeemed as a wife, if not as a human being.

- Brought Marie back into the main story. She's not just an annoying, petty character. She's an annoying, petty character who can get back to being a catalyst for Hank. It's the only reason she exists in this universe.

- Took the shine off Hank's hero status. This whole thing was shaping up to be his story, but it's hard to get past Hank's ego in this. He pushed Skylar too far -- right back to Walt, it appears -- and admitted to Marie that catching Walt is really about Hank's pride, not justice.

- Makes Lydia the rightful villain, the worst kind of villain -- she's engineering death and destruction but can't even look at her own handiwork.

Kind of silly the didn't figure out a way to get Walt Jr. staring into a cereal bowl one more time.

I can see why you'd say that. It may have been a placeholder of an episode, but I likened it to being in a holding pattern during turbulence; it was a rather bumpy-filled ride, and it makes you only want the plane to land more quickly.

yeah...these were the scenes that HAD to happen before moving forward and I get that, but still, I'm used to being awed by this show continually, so with the bar raised as high as it is, it's tough for me to accept anything but "HOLY CRAP, THAT WAS AWESOME AND I CAN'T WAIT FOR NEXT WEEK!"

still, an "okay episode" for Breaking Bad is still a sick episode in pretty much any other show.

i agreed with a lot of the thoughts except for the "humanization" of Walt. I don't believe Walt wants to keep the $ for his kids...I believe that's the only way Walt gets to feel like he wins. That's all Walt has ever really cared about. it's why he didn't take the job/money for his treatment from his former partners.

What I agree with most in what Gad had to say is how they turned me just a SMIDGE against Hank, who was absolutely becoming the hero of the show. Pride will seemingly be the downfall for both Hank and Walt, two sides of the same coin.

I have to disagree. I don't' think Walt was in any condition to lie. I believe that that was a "moment of clarity", unless of course he's lying to himself..which is possible.

I hope this show is good and all, but damn, just how bad has AMC completely lost its focus. American MOVIE CLASSICS. I mean, after all, they've pretty much lost the CLASSICS part of it. Now the MOVIE is getting tossed out as well.

We need more venues for classic American cinema, not less. Its hard enough to watch the old time Hollywood classics on cable as it is.

Posting this not to get a rise out of Stout but just to illustrate how the shift in AMC just a few years ago has panned out. It's been a fun ride.

i don't buy it. does his family really need ALL that money? do we remember how much was in that storage space? looks like he could probably give Skyler 1 percent of that and they'd be set for life and then she could turn him in.

no way...walt wants SOME kind of win, maybe subconsciously, but he wants the last word. if he's going down, he's going down his way. pride before the fall.

We're not being fair to Skyler. Apparently.

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/08/24/opinion/i-have-a-character-issue.html?smid=fb-share&_r=0

As an actress, I realize that viewers are entitled to have whatever feelings they want about the characters they watch. But as a human being, I’m concerned that so many people react to Skyler with such venom. Could it be that they can’t stand a woman who won’t suffer silently or “stand by her man”? That they despise her because she won’t back down or give up? Or because she is, in fact, Walter’s equal?

I think she misses the point. Skyler has tried to have it both ways -- enjoying the fruits of Walt's enterprise while maintaining the illusion of moral authority over him with her shrill-pitched hypocrisy. If she had simply chosen a side she would have all kinds of sympathy, but she would be less interesting as a character and the story would be less interesting. As much as I hate to admit it, she's been integral to the whole thing, even though I previously wished Walt would just shoot her and put me out of my misery.
