The Tampa Bay Buccaneers made a somewhat surprising move in the 2025 NFL Draft, selecting Ohio State wide receiver Emeka Egbuka with the 19th overall pick. Egbuka adds a polished, versatile weapon to its offense, one that could pay dividends both immediately and in the future.
Egbuka leaves Ohio State as the program’s all-time leader in receptions, tallying 205 catches for 2,868 yards and 24 touchdowns over 50 games. He recorded two 1,000-yard receiving seasons and played a key role in the Buckeyes’ 2024 College Football Playoff National Championship. His track record at one of college football’s premier programs reflects a player ready for the pros, as Jason Licht said he didn’t bring in Emeka Egbuka for a pre-draft visit because he “had no questions” about the star receiver.
Egbuka is known for his crisp route running and ability to create separation. He uses his quick feet to exploit defensive weaknesses, often finding space in both man and zone schemes. His reliable hands and body control make him a consistent target, especially in contested catch situations. His build and profile mimic those of current Buccaneer receiver Chris Godwin.
One of Egbuka’s greatest assets is his versatility. While he’s most effective in the slot, he’s also capable of lining up outside, giving the Buccaneers options when designing offensive packages. Mike Evans is now 32 and on the final year of his contract, along with Chris Godwin returning from a dislocated ankle that could sideline him to start the season. Tack on his football IQ and leadership, as he was a team captain at Ohio State, Egbuka emulates exactly what GM Jason Licht looks for in a Buccaneer.
