The first Ohio State football player is off the board in the 2025 NFL draft, and the distinction goes to wide receiver Emeka Egbuka, who was selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with the No. 19 pick.
Egbuka played four full seasons at Ohio State, and he was always overshadowed by another elite wide receiver. In his first year, he was way down the depth chart, behind Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Chris Olave, and Garrett Wilson, but even after that the Buckeyes always had another star to grab the headlines. In his sophomore and junior seasons, it was Marvin Harrison, Jr. This past year, it was Jeremiah Smith. I can hardly think of another 1,000-yard receiver who has received such little fanfare. But on NFL Draft night, the show will all be Egbuka's.
He came to Ohio State as a high-profile recruit out of Washington State and immediately began to show what he could do. His precise route running, soft hands, and ability to track the ball separated him from many other receivers, even without the fanfare of some of the more publicized receivers on the OSU roster.
It was always thought that he would be an NFL first-round selection when he did come out in the NFL draft, and that dream was realized on Thursday. Tampa Bay is getting a pros' pro at the position, and he'll be an even better person in and around the community.
We can't wait to see what Egbuka does at the next level down in the Sunshine State.
