HARBOR SPRINGS — The door to basketball season in the state of Michigan is officially closed and with it Friday came the news that Harbor Springs head coaches John and Amy Flynn will not be back along the bench next season.

On Friday, April 18, the school confirmed to the News-Review that both John and Amy would not return as coaches, but did not offer further details at this time.

Both coaches spent four years in the position, with John as head coach of the varsity boys basketball program at Harbor Springs and Amy leading the varsity girls program, hired before the 2021-22 season.

Amy compiled an 80-14 record leading the girls team, earning two district championships, including one this past season, which also came with a 14-0 Northern Shores Conference title.

She also helped lead the team to back to back 22-3 seasons. In the previous three years before taking over the Harbor job, the Rams went 9-48 as a program.

John led the boys teams to a 60-35 mark over the last four years, winning a pair of district titles, including this season in a 21-4 campaign. The Rams were 14-24 in two seasons prior to his hire.

The Flynns were both standouts at Grand Valley State University in their own playing days. John was an All-GLIAC basketball player for three straight seasons in college and holds multiple records at Grand Valley, including scoring average (19.6). He’s also a member of the GVSU Athletic Hall of Fame.

In her playing days from 1996-99, Amy holds the GVSU women’s basketball record for career 3-pointers made (239) is 10th all-time in scoring (1,296), third in all-time steals (268) and fourth in career assists (393).

Both Amy and John finished as candidates for the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan regional coach of the year honor for the 2024-25 season, finishing inside the top six voting.

A basketball family with roots within the Harbor program, John and Amy's daughter, Olivia, finished second in the state's Miss Basketball Award voting this season and was named the Michigan Sports Writers Player of the Year in Division 3. She will attend Western Michigan University to play basketball next season and is also the school's all-time leading scorer. Braeden Flynn, an all-state boys basketball player with the Rams, will be a senior in 2025-26 and is currently just a handful of points shy of becoming the boys all-time leading scorer.

A request for comment to John was not returned as of 11:15 a.m. Friday, April 18. Please check back with the News-Review for more.
