NEW YORK – The start to Tyler Black's 2025 season has gone from bad to worse.
After a back strain caused him to miss an early portion of spring training and left him playing catch-up in an attempt to make the Milwaukee Brewers' opening-day roster, Black has since suffered a broken hamate bone in his right hand – an injury that will sideline him for six to eight weeks.
Black was the 33rd pick in the 2021 draft by Milwaukee but has battled to stay on the field for much of the time since.
The 24-year-old infielder did break through and make his major-league debut with the Brewers in 2024 but was unimpressive in three stints with the team and spent most of the season playing at Class AAA Nashville.
He entered camp this year hoping to finally grab a foothold as a backup first baseman and left-handed-hitting option at designated hitter, but after missing time with the back strain never was able to get on track at the plate.
Black was optioned to Nashville on March 22 and anticipated making his season debut Friday for the Sounds.
Instead, he's facing another lengthy recovery following surgery.
