Listening to Deone Bucannons press conference and other audio interviews post-draft, one of the things that has stuck out to me is his praise of Adrian Wilson and wanting to play just like him. When specifically asked about the future Ring of Honor inductee, he responded with
"That’s the level I want to be at, what he did,” Bucannon said. “Adrian Wilson, he is a great strong safety, especially for the Cardinals, a Hall of Fame-caliber player. It’s one of the guys you want to emulate. That’s what my blueprint will be based off of, Adrian Wilson, someone of that caliber. Nothing less."

And do you think Adrian Wilson noticed that the Cardinals took a SS in the first round? Of course he did! Here is Wilson's tweet to our 2014 1st round pick:

“Congratulations on being drafted to the @Azcardinals,” Wilson wrote. “Tradition is there for you. Get to work.”

Well, all that got me thinking. Last season the Cardinals cut #24 because his CAP hit was around $3 million and the Cardinals front office decided, and rightfully so, that our long time strong safeties play was not worth the money he would have been paid. The Cardinals ended up signing Yeremiah Bell for the league minimum and moved on from arguably the greatest safety to ever wear a red bird on his helmet. A-Dub signed with the Patriots but hurt his hamstring in pre-season. He was put on IR and cut at the end of the season, thus making him a current Free Agent.

All of that brings me to this: We should bring back Adrian Wilson!

I know what some of you are thinking... "He's too old and slow!"... "It's time for the young guys!"... And guess what, I couldn't agree with you more! As of right now the Cardinals are stocked up on young safeties who have a legitimate shot at making the final 53 man roster. At SS we've got D Bucannon (Rookie), C Taylor (3 year vet), and C Lofton (UDFA Rookie). At FS we've got T Mathieu (1 year vet), R Johnson (6 year vet), and T Jefferson (1 year vet). That is already 6 guys. Adding A-Dub would give us 7. The Cardinals will most likely go with 5 on the 53 man roster, and like most of you, there is not a chance that I would cut Bucannon, Mathieu, Johnson, or Jefferson for an aging Adrian Wilson. Lofton will need to prove himself in pre-season and I'm not a huge fan of Taylors. With that being said, both of those guys play special teams, something Adrian Wilson has not done (although I haven't personally asked him if he would in the future). So there is a pretty good chance I would not cut either of those two for Adrian Wilson. So what's the point of bringing him in if it's more than likely he will not make our final 53?

Last year the final cut for the 53 man roster was on August 31st, and it looks to be around the same time this year. That means the Cardinals have roughly 16 weeks before making final cuts. Can you imagine the knowledge that, not only Bucannon, but the other young safeties can learn from Adrian Wilson in a span of 3 and a half months? The only player in our group of strong safeties to ever practice, work out, or play around A-Dub is Rashad Johnson. And as of right now, Rashad is the most seasoned safety we have on our roster, teaching our younger players the in's and out's of not only playing safety in the NFL, but doing so at a Pro Bowl caliber level. So what am I proposing?

Lets sign Adrian Wilson for the league minimum, like we did with Bell last year. Lets give our young safeties a real mentor to look up too and learn from. We don't have to keep him past final cuts, if it doesn't look like he's will to be worth the roster spot. The worst thing that can happen is our young guys get almost 4 months to learn from a potential Hall of Fame veteran, who will be busting his a** trying to make the team. Bucannon says that's the level he wants to be at. The Cardinals should give him every opportunity they can to help get him there. Rather then tell him what you want him to do, show him.

For years we said the Cardinals should draft a legit SS to learn behind Adrian Wilson and be ready for the day when Wilson no longer wore Cardinal red. But the front office waited too long and cut him before giving him the opportunity to finish the legacy he started. The only thing left for A-Dub to do is pass everything he's learned on to the "next guy". Lets give him the opportunity to do that. Lets give Bucannon, Mathieu, and all our other young safeties the opportunity to learn from one of the greatest men to ever wear Cardinal red.

And if A-Dub proves he's worth a spot on the 53 man roster...lets win him a Super Bowl ring in the stadium he helped build! :newcards:

No, out of respect. It is hard enough to cut a guy when his time has come but to do it possibly again removes the class of letting it stand where currently there is still respect between Wilson and the Cardinals

Yes, lets bring him in, sign him and let him retire as a Cardinal. Then lets hire him as a coach to work with the secondary.

I agree with REDDOG on this one. I think we all would like to see A-Dub retire as a Cardinal!

I think as soon as AW announces his retirement the Cards will sign him to that honorary contract and let him go out as a Card. As much as any player in my memory, he was a true Cardinal and always played with pride and intensity.

I haven't heard his intentions---he may well want to play this year. So wantring to bring him in as a 'mentor' with plans to cut him when the roster is trimmed would be an insult, not a show of respect.

Agree that the best is to have him retire as a Cardinal and eventually have him in the Cards Ring of Honor.

That's only true if we are not his only opportunity to play this season. If we are the only team offering any kind of shot, I don't think that's a sign of disrespect. I think A-Dub would be grateful for the opportunity to at least try for a roster spot. It will be up to him if he's still good enough to make the team.

So, the same coaching staff that looked at his performance and cut him because he couldn't cover TE's and WRs is now going to look at him after drafting a SS and decide that he can? After a year out of football with a hamstring? After he got cut by the Pats who are known to take veteran players and get the most out of them before they retire?

In your original post you were pretty clear with your intentions to bring in AW as a 'mentor' and to cut him if he couldn't make the roster. "Lets sign Adrian Wilson for the league minimum, like we did with Bell last year. Lets give our young safeties a real mentor to look up too and learn from. We don't have to keep him past final cuts, if it doesn't look like he's will to be worth the roster spot. When he retires, honor his work with the Cards. If you want to hire him as coach, say so. But don't bring him in as a mentor with intentions to cut him if he can't make the roster. . . which is exactly what you said.

In no way do I think it is disrespectful to give a guy one last shot at making an NFL team. After sitting out a year due to injury, diminishing skills, and age accounted for, I'd be surprised if any team in the league gives Adrian Wilson a shot this year. A mentor for a rookie on the team he spent his entire career on may be the best opportunity he's got.

One of the things Steve Keim is known for is being honest with players. I do not think it would be disrespectful at all to give A-Dub a call and say "Look, I can't promise you a spot on the 53 man roster but I can give you an opportunity to show what you've got. I'd love to get you around some of our younger players so they can watch and learn what it takes to be a true HoF caliber player. If you make yourself uncuttable, we'd love to keep you around all season." Every player that has ever played in the league understands that if you aren't better than the guy you're fighting against for a spot, you will be cut.

Disrespectful would be signing him, watch him be better than the other players you have, and cutting him because you got what you needed and now he's useless to you. If his play shows he doesn't have it anymore, nobody would be mad at Steve Keim for cutting him. At least he gave him a shot.

Keim and A-Dub already had their exit interview.

Imo - at some point there may be the one day final contract.

(Then, if it makes sense to the DC, one could see a return as a hands on consultant with the safeties, perhaps leading to something more permanent.)

Not a doubt Adrian Wilson with retire a Cardinal and probably a one day contract. Look at the way he is talking. This thread is going nowhere because the future of the destination is etched in stone... A-dub will retire a Cardinal :)

I think it was about money and to a lesser extent age, heck he never could cover anybody, because the Cards just drafted the exact same guy in the first round. So if he could be picked up for a reasonable cost i think he would be better than Curtis Taylor and Oriahn Johnson.

Oh well I just jinxed any chance of that happening or of Adub playing anymore.:D
