One of the first teams to strike a trade during the NFL free agency period, the Cleveland Browns shipped out quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson to the Philadelphia Eagles.
They also sent a fifth round pick with the former fifth round pick in exchange for former first round pick Kenny Pickett. The Browns have told the former Pittsburgh Steelers' starter that he will get the chance to compete for the starting job in 2025 as the team continues to overhaul their quarterback room.
However, back to Thompson-Robinson, he may not be the last player the Browns trade this offseason as their locker room and roster require a bit of a refresh. Cornerback Greg Newsome II has been a rumored candidate for some time, but who are some other names on the roster that could be wearing a different uniform in 2025?
Here are five candidates:
Not only are the Browns overhauling their quarterback room, but the running back room needs a change as well. Jerome Ford has been given two years to prove he can be an effective back to no avail. Now entering the last year of his contract, there is a chance the Browns could flip him for a late Day 3 pick and look to draft another young running back to add to the room instead.
As the Browns look to get back to their wide-zone roots, a 380-pound offensive tackle may not be a great fit for that scheme. The Browns signed Cornelius Lucas as well, who has plenty of starting experience at both left and right tackle. Offensive tackle is a 2025 NFL draft need for the Browns too, so if they invest a high pick in the position then the spot for Jones on the roster becomes clouded. The former fourth round pick could be moved to a team like the New England Patriots.
The Browns are getting younger along their defensive line. Expect the team to draft another one this year after drafting two last year. This comes after signing Maliek Collins to a two-year deal as well.
Shelby Harris might also want to play for a competitor as his career begins to sunset. Harris is a cut candidate, like Dalvin Tomlinson, given how easy it is for the Browns to get out of his contract. However, a team may be willing to give up a Day 3 pick for a steady performer like Harris who is on a cheap deal in the last year of his contract.
After signing former first round pick Joe Tryon-Shoyinka the Browns could look to move another veteran in the room on the last year of his contract. Ogbo Okoronkwo signed a three-year deal with the Browns in the 2023 offseason as a rotational pass rusher. While he has performed up to the details of his mid-level contract, the Browns are in a position to potentially draft Penn State pass rusher Abdul Carter and already have young players like Tryon-Shoyinka, Alex Wright, and Isaiah McGuire on the roster.
Greg Newsome II has been in trade rumors for two years now and this could be the year it finally happens. He is entering the last year of his contract with $13 million in guaranteed money to his name. The Browns have young and capable cornerbacks like Cameron Mitchell and Myles Hardin who can play in the slot in both nickel and dime sets. They could also draft another cornerback in the 2025 NFL draft to fill the void that would be left by trading Newsome.
