CLEVELAND (AP) -- Browns tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. sustained internal injuries when he was thrown from a motorcycle, the team said Monday night. Winslow, who missed most of last season with a broken right leg, also has swelling in his right shoulder and right knee. The extent of those injuries won't be known until further tests are performed and the swelling subsides.

The Browns didn't provide details of Winslow's internal injuries, but said they are not life-threatening. Winslow had complained of chest pains after he was injured Sunday.

Winslow is being treated at the Cleveland Clinic by the team's medical staff, Browns spokesman Bill Bonsiewicz said. He will be hospitalized overnight and there is no timetable for his release, the team said.

Winslow was riding in a community college parking lot Sunday when he hit a curb at about 35 mph and was thrown from the motorcycle, Westlake police Lt. Ray Arcuri said.

``He went over the handlebars and was real evasive about what the injuries were,'' Arcuri said.

The 21-year-old Winslow was wearing a helmet, but it wasn't strapped on and flew off his head, Arcuri said. He landed in a landscaped area at the edge of the parking lot, falling hard enough to tear out a small tree.

He and four other men were riding motorcycles in the parking lot, not far from Winslow's home in suburban Cleveland. There was no alcohol involved, Arcuri said.

``The four gentlemen said he was testing the bike out learning to ride,'' Arcuri said.

Winslow purchased the 2005 Suzuki GSX-R750 last month. He could face charges of reckless operation and operating without a valid driver's license because he didn't have a learner's permit, Arcuri said.

Many professional athletes have contract clauses that prohibit them from dangerous activities, including motorcycles. Browns spokeswoman Amy Palcic declined comment on whether Winslow's deal has a similar provision, saying the team doesn't release contract information.

The first-round draft pick broke his right leg against Dallas in Week 2 while attempting to recover an onside kick in the final seconds. He missed the rest of his rookie season.

Winslow had five receptions for 50 yards in his first two pro games.

He has had two operations on the leg and said in March that he expected it to be fully healed for this season. Winslow signed a six-year, $40 million contract with the Browns, but lost a $5.3 million bonus because of the leg injury.

The bike he was riding is not for begginers it has a top speed of over 150mph.I have been riding since I was a kid & currently have a ZX12r (Kawasaki Ninja 1200) and a Kawasaki KX500 for the dirt.I never ride without protective gear & a helmet. If you noticed in the statistics the biggest increase in fatalitys was in the over 40 age group.Thats when your dentist or lawyer decides to get a Harley has no skills & probobly rides without a helmet cause its cool. Then you have the 18-24 crowd on sport bikes with flip flops no fear & no helmets cause its cool.Throw in the clueless car drivers & I'm not surprised at the increase in fatalitys.

Money well spent by Cleveland...

fricken idiot!

When you are young you are indestructable. I survived three major motor cycle crashes which should have killed me (no helmet). You could not pay me to get on one now. I moved from motorcycles to jet fighters which were a lot safer.

"..and in this corner.."

Crazy Canuck, Where all the empathy should lie is toward the Cleveland Browns.. They've basically payed 10-12 million in 1+ years for a name. :sarcasm: Winslow2 has nothing like the character of Winslow1- how much of that is 1's fault, and how much just the spoiled punk syndrome?
He's :lame:
GO CARDS!!!
I'll save my empathy for about 10 or 11 Cardinal opponents this year! :newcards:

I wish they had video of it.It had to be freakin' hilarious. I'm sorry but seeing someone hit the curb and flip over the handle bars is funny. That's funny,i don' care who you are. It reminds me of some movie i saw when a kid was riding his bike and wasn't paying attention and slammed into a parked car. Thus, flipping over the handlebars and onto the car.

I don't think I would find it humorous. You can see my earlier post for clarification.

I'm so glad we didn't draft Winslow or Taylor. I hope Rolle isn't this much trouble.

If this keeps up teams may start to shy away from Miami players.

Right. :sarcasm:

Yup all 50 something of the Miami players in the NFL are not worth the trouble. :sarcasm:

Vilma, Williams, McGahee, Portis, Reed, Wayne, McKinnie, et al. :lame: :lame: :lame: :lame:

The funny thing is they do have it on film. They have security cameras inthe parking lot. Some Browns fans said they showed on the news there. I don't have a link though.:D

Riiding bikes nearly my whole life doesn't make me an expert , but it sure as Hell has convinced me that about 90 % of the people I see on bikes don't have a clue. It's fashionable and "cool" to ride a bike and that is a bad combination. Sold my last bike about ten years ago when I got tired of dodging oblivious morons on th roads.

Thanks for that post 88. In 1975, the night my friend flipped my MGB and broke my neck, I was flown by chopper to the Naval hospital in Richmond, Virginia.

There were 14 of us admitted that night. Me, a guy cut in half by the launch wire on an aircraft carrier, and 12 motorcycle crash victims. Of the 12, 6 died, 4 lived with brain damage, 2 recovered fully.

Motorcycles kill too many.

Sorry for not responding earlier. Thanx for disclosing the info, and to be doing so in my post. I don't know what to say but thanks for the service of both our country and this awesome forum. I don't know what mgb is...motor grenade...b?? I could be stupid though...

The aircraft launch thing is WOW. Is that the thing that catches their landing, or do they have something similar for the launch and he was in the way..(no need to respond if you don't want to)...but wow...I can only think of that movie "Ghost Ship" as a reference, when some steel line from like a life boat or something went throught the entire ship and well...cut everybody in half....how horrible..and IT CAN occur in real life under certain conditions is a humbling thought for me to ponder in how I view and live my life.

Also, road rage on a bike is a bad idea. Everything else out there is bigger than you.

Yep, I'm pretty sure I posted this somewhere here at the time it happened but about 2 years ago now a guy I went to highschool with was involved in a road rage incident. He was on a motorcycle, some guy cut him off and apparently they yelled at each other and he apparently flipped the guy off. He turned into a parking lot, the guy followed him in, rammed him with his truck, flipped him off the bike and he's now paralyzed from the waist down and probably for the rest of his life(just turned 40 recently I think).

They convicted the guy, took well over a week to catch him his family was hiding him, then his family went on tv multiple times saying it was racism(the guy who rammed him was Mexican American, ironically the victims mom is also Mexican American I guess they didn't realize that when they claimed racism). They also claimed that not only had he flipped off the guy in the truck "he spat at him" as if that was supposed to justify ramming and paralyzing him. The guy also claimed it was an accident he was just trying to scare the guy but his brakes didn't work blah blah.

Last year I heard that a guy who'd been in jail with the defendant was the key in the whole case because he testified that in jail the guy had no only admitted he'd done it, he said he did it on purpose and even stopped to look at the guy on the ground after hitting him and yelled "that's what you get".

They are reporting on the radio that, according to the owner, Winslow left the bike shop popping a wheeelie and his neighbors reported him riding wheelies up and down the street all day.He did have a learner's permit but the police are deliberating on whether to charge him with wreckless operation. It's hard to feel sorry the guy when he was riding around like an idiot. It would be different if it was an accident but he brought it on himself.

Does that mean he'd JUST bought the bike, or bike shop as in repair shop?

I mean if you just bought a bike,m have a learners permit, and do something that silly on it yeah I agree hard to have a lot of compassion for that.

Good point. Stupid or not the guy is hurt and his carreer is in danger. I wish this on no one. I have done stupid things in my life but fortunately it did not cost me what it may cost Winslow. Who will throw the first stone?

Yup. That's always going to be a risk you take when you hand over millions to a 22 year old. This is a perfect example of why so many teams today stress character and maturity in ranking a prospect.

All NFL contracts have restrictions on what you can do. I read his specifically mentioned motor cycles. As a 22 year old pilot there was an aircraft that you should not break the sound barrier in. One day over the Georgia swamps I nosed over and did it. I could have easily ended up 100 feet beneath the swamp. It was dumb. I was not stupid just dumb as we all are at some point when we are young. Anyone out there had unprotected sex lately?

ESPN reported that the Browns are worried about the severity of a knee injury he suffered.

He has broken ribs and a knee injury. (Not to mention the broken leg he'll be coming back from)

I don't know how bad the knee injury is, but because it is non-football related and is from falling off a motorcycle going 35mph it is probably not just a torn acl or something...it could be anything from a little damage to a full knee reconstruction...(and the browns are concerned with it....so)

I'm not a doctor, but I think it's entirely possible he won't play this season.

Went to the browns board and found this

By Patrick McManamon, Beacon Journal staff writer

Kellen Winslow spent part of Sunday afternoon riding his motorcycle to Canton to visit a bike superstore.

When Winslow left the store, he did a "wheelie" on Kirby Ave., said an off-duty police officer who was working at Harding's Park Cycle & Power Equipment.

"I looked at the guy working with me and said, `That's a million-dollar wheelie,' " said Eric Stanbro, a police officer who works in Stark County. Stanbro asked that his specific police department not be named; his employment was verified. A policeman named Eric told the same story on WKNR on Tuesday afternoon without revealing his last name.

The Browns released no new medical information on Winslow, who remained in the Cleveland Clinic. The team had said Monday night that Winslow had internal injuries, which were stable, as well as swelling in his right knee and shoulder.

The team is concerned about the knee, because swelling can indicate a serious problem. Possible injuries won't be known until more medical exams are concluded.

Winslow, the team's first-round draft choice a year ago, was hurt when he crashed his Suzuki motorcycle Sunday night. Winslow was riding in a parking lot in Westlake, hit a curb and flipped over the bike.

Four friends were with him when he was hurt, and they told Westlake police Winslow was learning to ride the motorcycle, which he had purchased in early April.

Stanbro, who was working with another off-duty police officer at Harding's, said Winslow spent 60 to 90 minutes at the customer appreciation spring open house.

Dennis Harding, manager and part owner of Harding's, confirmed Winslow's presence, and added Winslow arrived and left on his motorcycle.

Harding said he talked briefly to Winslow to thank him for coming.

"He was nice," Harding said.

Stanbro, who was present for traffic control and general security, said Winslow signed several autographs and posed with several fans for pictures. Stanbro said Winslow spent most of his time shopping for motorcycle apparel.

"His group of people went to leave and we asked them not to do any burnouts or anything in the parking lot," Stanbro said. "They headed east on Route 62, and (Winslow) was the last one in their group. As they pulled out he popped a wheelie.

"It was a small one. Then he hit the throttle and went up a little higher. He held it for about 100 feet.

"He sat down and off they went."

Stanbro said he guessed Winslow was going at "a very high rate of speed" when he did the wheelie (a stunt in which a bike rides on its back wheel only).

"He gunned it," Stanbro said. "He was going real fast. I'd estimate between 40 and 50 miles per hour."

Stanbro was doing a best guess on the speed and distance of the wheelie.

"It appeared to us he was riding with a bunch of very experienced riders," Stanbro said. "The way they were dressed, their bikes. His bike had a 30-day tag on. He looked a little uncertain. He had his helmet on.

"Two of their guys were doing wheelies when they got to the event."

Stanbro called the wheelie "a very dangerous move."

"I don't believe he's that experienced a rider and very experienced riders wreck all the time on those," Stanbro said.

Lt. Ray Arcuri of the Westlake Police Department said Winslow's friends described Winslow as a "novice rider."

Told that Winslow apparently had ridden the bike from his home in Westlake to Canton, Arcuri said, "We want to find out exactly what went on."

Arcuri said the only charge Winslow faces would be reckless operation or failure to maintain reasonable control of a vehicle, both traffic tickets. He said the Westlake police are looking into whether Winslow had a valid license to drive the motorcycle.
