Browns | Green to be Released? - from www.KFFL.com
Thu, 17 Mar 2005 10:38:35 -0800

The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports the Cleveland Browns may release RB William Green. They appear one step closer to making it happen after signing restricted free agent RB Chester Taylor (Ravens) to an offer sheet. While the Browns have given Green permission to seek a trade with another team, there have not been any interested parties in working out a deal for the former first-round draft choice.

I know we talked about this before on the board but now it appears that he will be released and we could get him without having to give up a draft pick. I'm sure Denny will be talking to his son Jeremy Green (ex-director of pro personnel for the Browns) to see if he is worth going after. He had a series of problems that I believe were drug related in 2003 but had a decent season as a part time starter last year. Any more thoughts on this? Again the price may be right.

If the price is right why not. He is a good runner with power. I would take him over Larry Croom, Damien Anderson or Troy Hambrick. :bhiich:

I'm with you on this. Denny also has had success with so called problem players.

Denny did seem to do okay with Randy Moss. I don't think William Green will have that big of an impact, but if he gets himself together, he is a very good back.

I would stay away from Green. He has a checkered past.

I wouldnt say Hambrick, he ran really well last year once he got into shape. But I would add Scobey to that list.

If he signs for a touch over vet minimum give him a shot and then draft Rolle or Johnson. Otherwise grab a back in the draft.

Cris Carter and Randy Moss - Darnell Dockett and Karlos Dansby - all of them with either drug or "attitude" problems - to name a couple off the top of my head.

If we brought in Willie Green, I'd be pleased as punch because we wouldn't need to take a RB on day one. Green and Shipp/Hambrick is a pretty good backfield.

Actually I would see it more like insurance to see If Shipp comes back from injury.

I think it would be more like - Draftee - Hambrick - Shipp/Green

Given DG's track record with "problem players" I think we should take a chance on this guy.

WG's career has so far been overshadowed by problems off the field and to some point I thinks it's understandable. WG grew up in a very bad neighborhood and both his parents died of AIDS when he was 12 or 13 years old. I'm sure he had some things to works out (in his head) when he suddenly received millions of dollars.

I think it is a huge risk to sign him. He had problems while at Boston College, now they carried over to the NFL. The Browns aren't releasing him for no reason. He had a rough childhood but look at a guy like Amare Stoudamire whose father died while he was young and his mother has been in prison and he had to take care of his younger brother. The guy didn't turn to drugs.

upgrade

William Green would be an upgrade over Scobey or Anderson. Keep Hambrick.

I'm not too sure about Green. When he got suspended for substance abuse the last time later that night he was in a local(Cleveland area) bar. That shows some pretty poor/just plain stupid judgement on his part.

Does this fit the type of speed back Green is looking for? 4.67?

From NFL.com

1. William Green, Boston College (6-0¼, 221, 4.67 on turf)
Had a complete workout at the combine. Performed 27 strength reps, had a 42-inch vertical jump, a 10-foot broad jump and ran two 40s (4.64, 4.69). Ran again on Pro Day — 4.52 with a roll start and 4.64. Was a high-school running back and track athlete (400 meters). Played but didn't start as a true freshman in 1999. Started only two games in 2000 but gained 1,164 yards (6.2 avg) and scored 14 touchdowns.

In 10 starts last season (suspended for the Miami game), gained 1,559 yards, scored 15 touchdowns and had a good bowl game against Georgia. Has the size you want at this position and playing speed. Plays much faster than timed speed. Good leg strength. Can break tackles and make people miss. Can catch the ball. Reminds me of Dallas' Emmitt Smith as a runner (inside tackle-to-tackle type). Needs to have some off-field questions answered. Like all backs, needs to work on blocking.

I agree with you on that, RB would still be a priority in the draft, not just as high as a priority. Green/Shipp, Hambrick and a Rookie pick would look nice on paper.
