Googs and Penny were both great signings. Remeber The Suns didn't sign Penny to the huge contract it was Orlando and on paper he would have been the final piece with Jason. You can look back and say man it is bad now. You need to look at what happen then. It is like saying the Grizz screwed up when they gave Big Country the long contract or Zo for Miami. Plus there was no salary cap back then. It is a different game now. Curently I am happy were the Suns are at. Last year was supose to be our growing year instead it is this year we will be taking a step back unit we add that final piece a REAL COACH!

Googs

I was living in San Francisco when the Warriors acquired Googs in the Chris Webber fiasco. The despirately needed a power forward, but he did very little and was soon traded for Marshall.

When you look at his stats in Minnestota, his best years were after Kevin Garnett joined the team. KG is the real the real deal and he drew a lot of attention so Googs could shoot uncontested mid range jumpers. When the signed him, I suspected that he would not be as effective without KG attracting so much attention.

My point was not that Googs was a horrible player. When healthy he could be fairly productive. The problem was that signed him to a contract as if he was a great player, which he never was. If Googs had really been worth that much, why did the Wolves let him go? (Under cap rules, the old team usually can offer more than another team).

BTW, I opposed the signing of Luc Longley although I admit he proved to be much worse than I expected. Without the Jordan halo which let him foul opposing centers with impunity, he was a classic stiff. Having a finesse center with Longley with a finesse power forward like Googs was a recipe for defensive disaster.

Googs was really really good with the warriors but not all the time/ That whole team was inconsistent. That was a pretty good team too, with googs, tim hardaway, sprewell and some pretty good role players. They just didn't bring it every night.

Googs was a 20/10 guy before the knee injury. He wasn't someone to build a team around but he was a pretty effective player for us.

Signing Googs reflected a my perception of the Suns as prefering "soft", finesse inside players rather than guys that can mix it up down low.

One of the reasons I think the Suns will evenually have a championship team is that in Amare they have an inside player who is both athletic and nasty. He is no where near having enough experience to be a great player yet, but he has the toughness the Suns generally seem to lack.

When was the last time you saw Googs dive for the ball, fight on the inside for a rebound, or push someone out of the paint? He is just not a physical type player as was demonstrated by how terrible he looked when they had him in at center in the first few games.

Under the best of conditions, Googs was a good supporting player, but never more than that. He was never effective at man defense, he could never make his own shot, and he was not inclined to mix it up down low. If the Suns had that kind of player to go along with him, maybe he would have worked out. But they should have focused on finding a power player first.

You're Eric's alter ego, aren't you? :)

Again, hindsight is 20/20--who knows what would have happened had Googs not had that bad knee injury (or even the stroke)? You certainly don't know. As SirChaz pointed out, Googs was a 20/10 player before Livingston got him. And yes, Googs was a finesse player, but 10 rebounds a game is pretty good for a "finesse" player who was not inclined to mix it up down low. Part of that was that he was a pretty good mid-range shooter once upon a time.

Actually Googs was more like a 15 points - 8 boards guys for the Suns before Livingston got to him. To tell the truth - I liked the signing as well, but was a little leery of it seeing as he was coming off knee surgery that ended his last season for the T-Wolves in 1999. The guy was never a 20-10 for us - he was for the Wolves - but not for us.

As to what should happen to him now - he should be treated like a lame horse - pulled around back and shot in the head - the guy is useless on the court - almost to the point of embarassing.

He had been playing great for us previous to his knee getting blown out. His injury may have been the single biggest reason for the Suns not being able to take finish off the Lakers that year (along with Kidd coming back from his busted foot).
