At the end of Urban's blog this afternoon.

...
Graves stayed pretty basic in his thoughts. He didn't want to get into contract details or specifics about players the Cards will now turn to -- although he did reiterate the Cards want most of all to re-sign their own. Judging by what both Graves and Whisenhunt said, this team is going to make a run at the still unsigned Bryant Johnson, which frankly I didn't think would happen. Then again, I assumed some team would have money-whipped Johnson by now, and that clearly has not been the case.
...

Wow, if we can re-sign him for cheap, I wouldn't mind it. It beats having to draft a WR in the 3rd rd, and he's already familiar with the system. I'm not a huge fan of Los Manos do Piedros II, but he's definitely better than what's left in FA and what we'd draft.

Keeping BJ would be a coup.

Spending more money on the WR position is a waste of money and should be used elsewhere. It is time to just let him go.

I'd be shocked to see him sign with us. It would basically mean he's admitting he's no better than a #3 WR in the NFL.

I'd love to see him sign for the price of a good #3, but really doubt it will happen. He'd almost have a better chance at going somewhere for less money and be able to show he's a starter (worked for Martay...errr)

The thing is, nobody is knocking down the door to sign him. Who has he visited? I seem to recall Miami and Buffalo, but no one else. Either he wants too much money or they've watched video of him. I'm guessing the latter.

I think it'd be a pretty successful pre-draft offseason, all things considered, if BJ signed long-term. He's a really good #3 and can start in a pinch.

I won't shed any tears if he goes, but damn, sure would be nice to have him. The offense comes back in tact from last year. Seems like that's quite a feat in today's NFL.

I'd be happy to see Bryant Johnson come back, just because we're a high ankle sprain away from Sean Morey, Starting WR. :barf:

I don't even need him long term. Two years, $750,000 per? $500K signing bonus? It's worth that not to have to integrate a new WR into the system.

He will be signed by Buff by Fri as per the NFL Network.

I like BJ, but I think he needs a change of scenery. Inconsistency makes him replaceable. I like the hell out of the guy for his demeanor and for his occasional great plays. I think we need that burner #3. Hope we get him on draft weekend.

That would be a very big, and pleasant, surprise. But, I really don't think it will happen.

I'm surprised he hasn't already signed with a team like Minnesota. They had a 2nd year QB (who was raw coming out of college) throwing to a rookie, a 2nd year guy and a 3rd year bust. They desperately need a veteran presence as they have no mentors in their passing game. BJ isn't a top WR but at least he knows how to find an opening in coverage by now.

If he leaves I hope we find someone to replace him because I don't like the idea of Urban as our full time #3.

He's like brussel sprouts... Ok if he's here, better if he's not. Cheap alternatives are available. I'd prefer to see the money spent on O-Line depth, RB (something tells me this will be a draft addition if at all), OLB or CB.

Who do you want as a #3 then? Someone who can start in a pinch and perform and be a reliable 3rd WR?

My priorities for our #3 WR go in this order:
1. Adequate to Good, can start as the #2 for a few weeks and not cost us games and make a few plays.
2. Be cheap, making no more than 2.x million a year, hopefully closer to 1.5.
3. Lots of speed.

Johnson probably doesn't fulfill more than one of those.

I'd prefer to move on unless he signs cheap and short term as laid out by Daisy above a few posts.

We've seen the best Bryant has to offer and it hasn't been very impressive. Apparently, every other team out there agrees.

My gut say move on anyway. We need speed and/or a more clutch WR. You don't improve on 8-8 by keeping the underperformers.

Even if we do sign him, my guess is he might not survive training camp if two younger guys with more speed show any upside at all.

The advantage to B.J. is that its one less position to fill in the crap-shoot draft, and wide receivers are a real crap shoot in the draft. At the right price, 1.5 to 2 million per year, I'd bring him back. $2 million is my upper limit....

4 years. 4-5 million in signing bonus

2008 vet minimum
2009 1.2 million
2010 1.5 million

Besides both Kurt and Matt want him back. That carries some weight with me.
