Not hard to find. He told this reporter the numbers straight up! :D

"the Lakers could then sign him for sever years for over $140 million" isn't exactly telling numbers straight up...

What the *#@$(*$** is your problem?

Where does he give the $90 million figure you're so proud of? Nowhere. We've already agreed that the Lakers can offer "substantially more money."

I'm not sure why Kupchak says "over $140 million" when we come up with $136 million, but that's close enough. We might be slightly off on what Bryant's salary last season was.

With respect to tax rates, la's highest bracket is 9.3%, phoenix is 5.04%.

Saves Kobe Bryant 5.3M$ taxes. The contract difference over the first 6 seasons is 5.3M$ in favor of the Lakers.

Conclusion? The money is almost EXACTLY the same over the first 6 years.
If you are going to use this theory then the most logical place he should go is San Antonio, no state income taxes at all.

the argument is that money will not be the deciding factor, not that he'll come to the suns because of money

Well then is the argument on winning championships, Duncan has two, Parker has one and San Antonio has cap space. I have mentioned this before, MJ is his idol and I would imagine his goal is to win more championships than is idol. San Antonio comes out on top for this catagory as well.

SA- more after tax money
SA- more chance to win championships

We can argue all day about what Bryant's priorities are. Of course no one knows. If his goal is to win more championships, he would probably prefer the Spurs. If his goal is to be the unquestioned leader on a team with championship aspirations, the Suns make more sense.

like mj, his goal is to carry a team to a title, aka be the number 1 guy with strong teammates, not be the number 2 guy.

It really comes down to ... what happens, happens. I cant say he'd rather play in san antonio than in phoenix or vice versa. I can think of about 10 reasons why he'd want to play in Phoenix rather than san antonio, but if I do you'll be able to think of 10 reasons of why he'd want to play in san antonio over phoenix. The whole thread is about the money issue as it relates to phoenix and la. It has nothing to do with weather or not kobe would rather play in san antonio or phoenix.

That said, the only thing we can do is wait.

Sorry for butting in, but I thought I would throw in some more rationale. I know the guys that want Kobe to come to Phoenix are trying to work the numbers to support their emotional attachment to him. Personally I do not want him in Phoenix and again my bias came across.

There's nothing to "work" in the numbers. Numbers are what they are. If people say that Bryant wants to come to Phoenix so that he can lead a heretofore unglorified franchise to the promised land, that's spin. If people say that his post-tax salary in Phoenix, for six years, would be nearly equivalent to what he'd make in Los Angeles, that's fact.

I just think him signing with Phoenix is "fiction".

Why? It isn't because of the "numbers".

And it's not like Bryant would have no input in who WE bring in as Free Agents either.

Spin comes in when you take out a year that one team can offer that another can't. Or you can say the numbers look better for years 1-3 for the Suns so he will come for that reason. You CAN make numbers look better or worse, hence the proverbial "you can make statistics say anything!" I have been in financial meetings where numbers are argued about quite passionatly.

That said, maybe the Suns can give him some golf clubs like when they wooed Penny Hardaway. :) Interestingly enough, Mrs. Bryant may have to be wooed more than Kobe. ESPN is reporting she has told friends she likes SOCAL a lot! That has the Clippers hoping! :) I think cepstrum is the most rational of all of us. If he comes here he does. He has 14 days to get whirl winded before the Lakers can offer him the big bucks! :)

They can't offer it now, but they can offer it later. Why won't you acknowledge that?

His wife and kid. OR His ex-wife and kid and concubines in LA.

If we sign him, there is no more room to bring in other decent FA's. If he stays in LA and Shaq is gone he can create his own team. I'm sure that there are guys that like Kobe and would want to play for him and the Lakers.

Same as you won't acknowledge Kobe could wait a year and get more later? :D

You say toe-may-to, I say toe-mah-to :band:

Again, you just address one point in my post, and ignore that numbers can be manipulated. I think you said "There's nothing to "work" in the numbers. Numbers are what they are." That's not exactly true. LA CAN offer it now. That's a FACT! When will you acknowledge that? :D

ESPN is reporting the woman with the rock currently named Mrs. Bryant has told others she likes SOCAL! Based on that, the Clippers think they have a better shot at Kobe! :D I think Kobe owes her! Don't you?

Let me get this straight, if Kobe would have bought his wife the 4M ring in Phoenix (6% sales tax) instead of LA (8% sales tax)he would have saved $80,000. Why didn't he wait until after July 15, 2004 to make up.

I've acknowleged it about ten times in the last 24 hours.

Huh?

Good point! Why would TMac go to Texas when he already lived in a tax free state? This is disaster for TMac! We NEED Elindholm and Slin Slin to call Tmac and tell him NOT to pass his physical! He's making a HUGE mistake!! :D

I more than acknowledged it when I countered with he could do 1 year then reup for more money! :D Why wait 6 long years, when you could do it after just 1 year? After that 1 year, you could change your mind and go somewhere else and get your money! :)

Geez, what is this--pull bad deals out of hat day? There's no way that Kobe Bryant does a 1-year deal with anybody!

It's possible that tomorrow I'll win the lottery--doesn't mean it'll happen...
