I saw that, too, on another thread. But it doesn't really say anything other than that Shelton dropped by. Notice that it didn't say that he was "invited" to the facility.

This seems like a lot of agent spinning right now...

Sure, but I would like to know who is the one actually throwing out the 2nd round pick idea. is that the agent, the bucs, or some overzealous beat writer

My question is this, are we a better team with Big at LT and LJ playing for someone else than we would be with LJ at LT and Big at LG?

I suspect not but I think the opinion of the OL varies widely on this board. There are people who are insisting Big is a top 5 LT already. I thought he played better than I expected but I saw something the other day (and if I can find the link again I'll post it) that says Big was charged with 7.5 sacks allowed this year and there were something like 15 LTs who allowed less sacks. big's strength is of course run blocking and I fully agree having him there improved our ability to run left, but I know LJ never allowed that many sacks in a season.

Anybody know a link for sacks allowed stats, I can't for the life of me find that link and I'd love to confirm that number as right or wrong.

Here you go Russ.

http://snap.stats.com/stats/nflinfo/findplayer.asp

Big was only charged for 6 sacks not 7.5. And you are wrong Shelton has allowed that many sacks in a season, in 2002 he had 9.25 sacks. And counting back at the games Big played in he allowed 4 sacks in his first 5 games which could be apart of him playing a new postition and never have played with Wells before. The last 2 sacks came when he was injured at the end of the season. Same situation with his 8 penalties.

Another year of chemistry with Wells and Step, and another offseason practiving his new postion of LT he will be a top 5 LT without a doubt.

By the way Walter Jones gave up 8.5 last year and then 0 this year. Pace gave up 5 sacks this year and had 10 penalties  .

Also this may not mean much but here are the YPC per side of the oline.

Left side - 4.05
Center - 2.98
Right side - 3.68

LJ's cap number is $4M per year. That's $3M base and $1M of bonus. To me, even playing RT, that's still not expensive. The cap keeps going up each year and will go up even more than normal either in 06 or 07. LJ is just not that expensive. How much would a RT cost to replace him in Free Agency? A good one would want at least $5M per year. If we trade him, the other teams only have to pay the base of $3M per year so he's actually a cheap RT.

Let him look around. If no teams knocks our socks off, keep him. He can play RT and be the backup at LT. The OL, such as it is, needs to add players, not subtract. The Cards barely made it thru last season as it was.

Keep LJ, bring in a quality RG and our OL is good enough.

:thumbup I agree we don't want to go into another year with AC as the starter.

Talk is cheap (particularly when it comes from an agent). When I see it, I'll believe it.

That said - are there any decent players TB wants to trade in lieu of a 2nd round or whatever pick?

They also have the "next Priest Holmes" , Michael Pitman! :D

The problem is that LJ is only really good at LT. He a finesse player and not physical enough to play RT in Green's system. He's decent at RT, but not as good as he was at LT. But he not going to play LT again. Green's decision to move Big to LT made sense, because that's the only position that justifies Big's salary. The development of Wells hurts Shelton as well, because suddenly we have one more player capable of handling the LT positon. That leaves us with three player capable of starting at LT and Shelton is the logical odd man out.

Basicly, Shelton got caught between Cap strategy, Wells development, Green's doghouse and the huge need for LTs in the league.

Really good post.

I agree that stability is a key to a great O- line. We should have that after 1 full year from center to left. The right side will most likely be made up of at least 1 vet and maybe 2. The is left and those guys will know each otrher already. I feel real good as long as we stay healthy this year.

P.S. A back who can hit the opening quickly makes the line better as well.

If by "great inside runner" you mean the o-line's butt cracks, then sure why not :bhiich:

For what its worth my previous comment was just a droll attempt at humor. But as Chicago is also interested perhaps the former first rounder T Jones would be available.

I read that Pittman will probably be cut.

but john you are missing the fact that this is SHELTON who is seeking a trade. There is no guarantee that the cards would even do it, or any indication that they really want to.

I think that with our record and needs we cannot always accomodate a guy who wants to be traded. If it were that simple all good players on sorry teams would just demand a trade and you would forever be at the bottom of the heap. It sort of revolves around who can we replace him with, what cost, and will the replacement be as good? OL need some seasoning and experience to become effective NFL players and from what is being posted there are not many available in FA. So we start another rookie. Does not sound like a good plan to me unless their is something wrong with L.J that we are not seeing. Other teams apparently are after him and they have experienced eyes on him. We are short on lineman to add to all this.
