I believe the idea is that a better GM would not have put us in the position we were at this offseason at QB.
I agree with much of the data presented in this thread. Keim is a league average GM. He has strengths and he has weaknesses. Most do.
My big critiques of Keim are his lack of roster continuity in re-signing mid level players, his first round selections, the AP trade, and where he has put himself at QB this offseason.
I don't believe we can determine if the offensive line's lack of development was due to him or Arians. Same goes with the poor special teams. Did he not draft players who could contribute or was he told it didn't matter.
At one time I was gnashing my teeth over the lack of a QBOTF and wondered why SK (or BASK or MBSK) were not even selecting someone during the draft. We all know the Logan Thomas experiment---after that, nada on the QB selection.
I pulled up the drafts at ProFootball Reference and looked at who the Cards selected and who was still on the board at QB at the time of the selection. I did not imagine any 'trade-up' scenarios but strictly went with the Cards at their draft slot.
At the time I checked on SK's drafts (a little over a year ago before the 2017 draft)--the only two QBs that looked to be a 'miss' in SK's picks were Carr and Prescott. Both those guys came back down to earth during 2017 and now don't look near the miss that they did back then. (Have to dig around on my old laptop and see if I still have those notes.) Also, I simply went with the 'next QB on the board' instead of every QB still on the board.
Here's the page for the 2016 draft:
https://www.pro-football-reference.com/years/2016/draft.htm
Goff and Wentz went 1-2 in at the top of the draft.
Cards were near the bottom of the draft and selected NKIM DT at pick 29. The next QB off the board was Christian Hackenberg to the Jets at pick 51 in the 2nd. (Advantage Cards with Hackenberg on the cut block this camp).
We didn't have a 2nd round pick (to NE for Jones). Next QB off the board was Jacoby Brisset to NE in the 3rd round at pick 91. (If we kept our 2nd round pick, we could have taken Brisset ahead of NE in the 3rd but we would not have Jones. Brisset shows promise---but I'll still take Jones).
We took Brandon Williams at pick 92 in the 3rd. Cody Kessler and Conner Cook were still on the board. In the 4th, we took Boehm ahead of Prescott. (Advantage Cowboys even with Prescott looking 'average' last year. Boehm hasn't earned the C position). ETC . . . through all the picks.
SK stuck with his BPA approach---and while we may not like the fact that we don't have a drafted QB on the roster---looks like they were correct at the time. Plenty of room here to disagree---but it is not a big a disaster as I first thought if you compare who the Cards took with which QB was still on the board.
