Walker was cut because he sucked and couldn't be bothered.

Hence the example was bogus.

Does that mean we didn't have problems heck no, but the example cited was bogus, hence a cheap shot.

Because it would be stupid for Walker to say something like.... their front office is a bunch of idiots. Wait.... Unless your name is Simeon Rice, it would be pretty lame.

Not saying you were wrong.... but he has to give us the "pick yourself up by the bootstraps" line or he wont get a story about him in the paper.

Oh.... and I agree that our management was completely incompetent.

I think the bigger problem is that Mac ran a 2-gap scheme, but drafted Walker who is a 1-gap penetrator. He was drafted despite not being a player who "fit" the current scheme of the team. That is an insane way to operate.

Sure you are.

Fact is he said it and it was quite some time after being picked up by the Eagles, maybe even a year or 2 iirc. So he had nothing to gain by lying, he was already an Eagle

The bottom line is that when a team invests a 3rd round pick on someone, they have to be prepared to help "bring the beast out" from time to time. That is in the coaches' job descriptions. The talent was there, as evidence of his career clearly illustrates. The team was unable to motivate or get something out of him for whatever reason and they let a great player whom would have helped them a bunch walk for less than nothing (considering he got a signing bonus).

A man has to hold himself accountable. I know it's a lost art, but you can't always count on coaches to do a job he can't do himself.

I agree, but at the same time the staff has to hold themselves accountable as well. Cutting him hurt the Cardinals, not Darwin Walker.

No it didnt. The Cardinals got rid of a guy that wasnt producing and sucked while he was here. By his own admission wasnt willing to work as hard as he should. So cutting him was the kick in the balls he needed. If he wasnt cut we would have just been excess baggage here eating up cap space.

cardsfanmd, I'll give this tiresome topic one shot from memory, just for you, because I think you are misinformed.

If I recall correctly and I think I do, in the 2000 draft year the conditions were these:

1. Bill Bidwill was still in total control of everything.
2. Ferguson was running the draft.
3. Mr. Beige, Vince Tobin was in his 5th and final year and under pressure.
4. Joe Greene was our dline coach.

Darwin Walker came in here, not just upset at not having been drafted in the first round, but thoroughly dissed and pissed off and let everybody know it. He made absolutely no effort in camp and both Ferguson and Tobin were in agreement to just dump him.

Tobin and Ferguson both knew their jobs were shaky and were trying to save their jobs, not coddle a petulant baby without his pacifier.

Since Bill was still in charge, the entire organization was indeed a dysfunctional mess. Not much they did or did not do went right nor is it relevant today.

ASFN did not exist then and Mike Olbinski and Bob Chebat were running azprosports.com, where most of us were posting. Mike had press access, I believe and his mother-in-law was Vince Tobin's personal secretary.

Mike was much more a hoops fan but did cover training camp and the draft in person. I was going to camp back then but only as a fan. Still, I stayed for the first 10 days of camp every year back then.

The organization was a lot more secretive back then.

Nidan's point is valid, I think. Using that snap shot of the year 2000 to make an analogy to today's Cards organization is just unfair to all involved, even to us on this board.

Clearly, everything about the Darwin Walker fiasco was a mess. And he shared in making it so. I can't prove it to you, not having saved radio interviews of Walker, Ferguson and Tobin. Yet, I assure you he did openly resist coaching and thought he was untouchable.

He was stunned the day he was cut. His attitude had been that we were lucky to have him here.

If this sounds like excuse making, so be it.

lol.. when I first saw this I honestly thought (and was openly excited) that Buster was making an epic comeback for the Cards to prove releasing him was a mistake..

Damn...

Yeah, when they initally picked him, out of all our picks I was "reletivly" most excited about him...

I do wonder what he is up to?

The Darwin Walker and Buster Davis situations really show how high first round draft picks can bite a team. You can release a bad attitude you took in the 3rd. You have to keep the one you got in the top 10 in round one.

That's one of the things I always used to defend Leonard Davis. At least he started for 6 seasons for the Cards and didn't get into or cause trouble off the field. Unlike guys like Wendall Bryant and Thomas Jones and David Boston.

How bad was it back then? From Dec. 12, 1999 through Nov. 11, 2001 the Cards were 5-23.

To all the people who voted for or otherwise supported the new stadium::koolaid::koolaid::koolaid::notworthy

Please don't remind me, I have a blank void for that era for the most part.

Of course beer might have played a part in the void :)

How do you figure it didn't hurt us Shane?? We wasted a thrid round pick and gave up on a geat player who we already gave free money to. How in the world does that not hurt? We passed on guys like Lavernueas (sp?) Coles to take Walker.

Do you understand these are the people your man Ian is defending??? I didn't insult the current Cards' staff. I said these people were incompetent at their jobs.

Yeah, but Walker wasn't cut because he sucked, he got let go because at that time, the local McDonalds had better staff and management than the Cards.

Walker was an obvious stud from the get-go. That pick made the whole draft worthwhile for me that year.:bang:

I never said anything about today's Cards.

If you admit that he shared in the fiasco, then your are also admitting that we played a role in it as well. That is the point I was trying to make.

I am really ? Where ?

All I said was that Walker admitted later that getting cut was largely his own fault due to his attitude ? Not sure where I defended anybody on that list maybe you point it out for me ?

Exactly. Especially since Philly wasnt even able to get Walker to do anything his rookie season either. Is not credited for a single game his rookie season. His sophmore season he only played in 10 games sparingly. Only made his jump his junior year in the league, traded by Philly in 07 to the Bills where he didnt play a down and they traded him to Chicago and duped them into a 25 Mill contract, pocketed 8 Mill that year and stunk it up in Chicago only to have them cut him after just one year after stinking it up in Chicago. He is still a free agent to this day becuase he is asking for a boat load of money. Dude has issues who played up to his level to get 2 new contracts from Philly and Chicago, then not play as good as he did before playing for a contract.

Lets not try and make Walker into a "Great Player". He was good for 3 out of 8 season. Played his hardest when a contract was on the line and was otherwise inconsistent the rest of the time.

Whoa, Ian, why not let it go? I've made my only point and I'm done.

It's not worth fighting over. You and I and a few others will forever be viewed by some fans as stupid apologists for the Cardinals. So what?

I agree. Also, I am done responding to nidan. Whenever I do he just edits my post anyhow.

Also, I have NEVER refered to you or nidan as stupid. Apparently some misconstrued words are really having a big impact here. Just because I dont agree with you guys on every single subject doesn't mean that I don't respect or appreciate either of you being here.

No use banning me this time guys, I will stay away on my own until draft time.
