Signing Campbell should be crucial. One could argue correctly he has been our defensive MVP so far. He should have a new contract like...NOW! This really gets me upset because if they franchise tag him with the front office getting a good deal, it will also mean Campbell will be thinking he is getting the shaft and won't want to sign the next time it comes up in the near future.

Does anyone really think we're going to let Campbell walk? Because if you do, then you have a lower opinion of the front office and coach than I realized. I will be shocked, absolutely stunned, if Campbell isn't a Cardinal.

What kind of money is he looking at? I'm not willing to keep any player if the price is not reasonable. The man is definitely not only a good bookend with 90 but he does a lot on special teams blocking field goals or demanding the attention so others can.

Actually (h/t to Chopper to pointing this out a month or so ago) with the new CBA (where it's becoming increasingly apparent that the players got screwed), only the top 5 salaries of the previous 5 years are being calculated for the Franchise Tag.

This leads to much lower franchise tag numbers (like 20% lower) than they would have been under the old system.
That's kind of what I was thinking, Owners did make out on that.

So guys like Jermichael Finley and Matt Forte are going to get incredibly, massively screwed, but Calais Campbell is only going to get really screwed by the Franchise Tag, and the Cards are going to get a really good player for an excellent salary.
That will be awesome if it goes down like that. :)

Franchising him would be dumb. You don't have to worry about CC getting his money then taking plays off. 5/40 sounds good with some workout bonus included.

So not a word from Graves yet about it? After he went on a nationwide media campaign about resigning Fitz? To me, that has franchise tag written all over it.

The franchise tag makes players bitter. Yes, it was made for teams to keep players and give them the average salary of the top contracts of that position but professional players do not want their franchise to say they are top five, they want to be regarded as number 1. It does not even come down to money (even though they are getting a ton of cash), they feel like it is a act of disrespect. How players say they will not play for another team again after going through the whole franchise tag routine. If the Cardinals want Campbell for the long haul, they better claim him and the only way to do that is a contract.

I have been calling for the Cards to resign Campbell since 4 games back. We are plain stupid. Just as the Cards emerging defense is showing what it can do he is now worth millions more than he was 4 months ago. Our defense has been improving since day one this year until now we are there with the big boys. Campbell showed many games ago he was one of the best pass blockers in the NFL and his block of a FG saved a a game for us. Do we ever think ahead.

Great game to today. Hopefully this will do wonders for Kolb who looked the part today we signed him for. Roberts is clearly our #2
and though Larry did not catch many he kept two defenders with him all day. Peterson gets better on coverage each game. A really great game. I liked Kolb running forward a hell of a lot better than when he runs backwards. His feet helped him and the team win the game. We got a couple of all pros on this defense as well as Fitz. Job well done Whiz and staff. Do not know what you said at half time but it worked.

Too late... He is not going to sign now and will wait for the off season to see his market value... he will be stupid if he doesn't

It's sad that the Cards are going to place the Franchise tag on him and hope he plays poorly in 2012 so that they can sign him to a smaller deal.

January: We're working really hard to get a deal done.
February: We've made progress, and the Franchise tag will ensure that we'll continue to make progress before the draft.
March: Unfortunately, the deadline for negotiating under the Franchise tag has expired, and we were unable to settle on the issues that we had under an extension.
September: Calais Campbell is a core member of this defense, and we look forward to him having a great year. We have a timetable for contract extension negotiations.

Wash, rinse, repeat.

This has to be post of the year. Hang it right next to Tango's ode to jake...:bang:

You actually think the FO hopes he plays bad next year????

What else did Calais have to prove coming into THIS season to show that he deserved an extension? Why did the Cards wait until late November to get anything rolling?

It's a sad but clear fact that the Cards wait on
Players hoping they get value if they decline. See: Antron Rolle and Karlos Dansby.
