Practice started with another punt return walk through. Very slow and just aimed at people knowing where they are supposed to be.
Then individual drills again all by position.
I watched the WR's the most during these and particularly enjoy watching the one where they run around in a square pattern making their cut at each cone. They have to make a catch at each side of the square that is thrown to them with velocity from approx 5 yards away. Breaston did the worst dropping two and fumblling with another.
The QB's were doing a flag exercise that I have never seen before They had two poles that were made into a double T at the top approx 15 yards apart from each other. There is an approx. 10" by 8" flag hanging by velcro at the extreme end of each T. They are colored red, blue, yellow, and white I believe. The QB gets the ball and starts his drop to about 15 and 20 yards away. During the drop the coach yells out right or left and the color. The QB has to make a quick decision and get rid of the ball and hit the 8x10 inch target from an average of about 15-20 yards deep. By far the best QB in this and most accurate was............................. Matt Leinart! He was easily nailing the targets that were called with precision. In fact he made it look easy. I was very impressed. That is a very small target from that distance. Warner was ok and the other two QB's just sucked. They couldnt hit crap today. It made my concerns about his accuracy the last two days go away.
They then broke into a drill where the WR/CB go one on one with each other. this was fun and the competition was excellent. Both Matt and Kurt threw the balls to them. E. Doucet had a magnificent catch in th eleft endzone corner after a tip by the CB. Fitz smoked Hood catching a beautiful fade pass from Matt in the Right corner of the endzone. Morey just blew DRC socks off on an in and out route for a TD. Left him frozen in his shoes and got some ooohs and ahhhs from the crowd.
Next was 7 on 7 again. Kurt and Matt were completeing almost everything. DRC made a break playing the ball and picked it off beautifully against Breaston on one play. Fitz had an unbelievably gorgeous horizontal lay out for a TD against hood. It was a thing of beauty and the clapping and oohs and ahhs were in full force. It was delivered by Matt!
During this I looked over at the OL/DL and saw hey were doing the pass rush drill they were doing the day before. I saw Deuce hold his own against Dockett today on two occasions. I tried to catch Laboy since he is supposed to be a pass rush specialist. I was unimpressed today he seemed slow and couldnt make it to the next level.
Next was 11 on 11 and Hightower was again getting some reps with Leinart under center. It was either first or 2nd team but was hard to tell due to distance. Hightower is quick and for a guy his size very shifty. The more I see of him the more I am impressed. The coaches must be too if he is getting 1st or 2nd team reps ahead of Shipp and JJ.
Okeafor had a nice tip of a Warner pass that was Int'd by Hood who had to lay out for the pick. It was a pretty defensive play.
DRC again had another fantastic Int of Leinart this time playing the ball and jumping the route. It was an easy Defensive TD and got the players pretty riled up. It was beautiful. His closing speed is really incredible. I am more and more impressed the more I see with him too.
Even though they werent hitting it was a pretty spirited practice... A lot of very pretty catches and defensive plays were made today. Nice to see and very entertaining. I also have noticed that the DL hasent been getting much pressure on the QB right now. But that could be disigned.
If my titles are off or my spelling sucks I apologize. But I try to get these up for you guys in a hurry. I also have 3 children hear begging for my attention as I write so I get distracted. Hope you like it. I cant remember everything I see so if you have any questions just ask. It might jog my memory.
